he can not be publicly interested in any job that wasn't formally open. Maybe he doesn't want to look like an arse and go with UT but how would you handle be given a 40 million dollar raise over the next 8 years of the end of your career.

Well, in fairness to UT, a big obstacle in presenting an offer to Nick is out the way
he's really not. Mack is very tied in to the power circle in Austin. They will seek his opinion and Powers has an anti-Saban agenda anyway.
I think people don't understand the politics. The end run by boosters undermined Powers and pissed him off. But more importantly, the guy leading the charge for Rick Perry ousting Powers is the same guy that approached Saban last year. Powers won the fight a few days ago to remain in charge. No way is he acquiescing to Wallace Hall's choice for coach.

Can someone give me the rundown on why Perry wants Powers out?
Posted on 12/17/13 at 12:19 pm to doghouse_4x4
Perry wants UT to have an openness and Powers wants it to remain elitist.

Has UT formed a search committee yet?

To be fair, Perry wants the same for A&M (his alma mater) and is meeting resistance there as well, though their pres took the Mizzou Chancellor's job.

Auburn and Florida State are playing for a title with endowments less than 500 million.
Wow, we raised more than that last year.
Puts things in perspective for me.

UT 6.24x better than TAMU in academics
To be fair UT ranks in the top 25 universities in the world at a tie with GT for #25. TAMU is not in the top 150 at #156.
Of note Michigan comes in at #20.

So go ahead and tell us the story of racism at UT. I'll reciprocate with what I know about Nuremburg on the Brazos.
Lets not ruin a nice thread like this and piss off the Poultry King.

if Les doesn't win another SEC title over the next 5-7 years, I think it is fair to say that he could get nudged out.
Man if that is all he wins in the next 5 years, that weill be painful. If the past is any indication of the future that is all we are looking at though.

How so? He was in the title game 2 years ago.

he absolutely wants the same at both. The difference is that when Gates left he had a lot more ability to manipulate A&M. He's basically been able to put his choices in place. The fact that Loftin bucked what he wanted got him pushed out because Loftin never had the backing Powers does.
Anyway, didn't mean to veer too far into Texas politics but just wanted to point out that is an undercurrent in the Horns coaching search.

So, tmc, if what you say is correct, it appears that Saban future at UT was tied to Powers rather than any perceived loyalty to Alabama, correct?

dude I have no fricking idea. I don't know the internal discussions, whether Saban gave them the time of day or what.
I'm just trying to lay out the players here:
- Bill Powers is the long serving President of UTx
- Wallace Hall is a regent and booster that approached Saban last year. He's a Perry appointee that has publicly been feuding with Powers and stated he'd have him ousted by the new year
- Mack Brown, Deloss Dodds, and Powers are all extremely tight
Powers and Dodds were furious that Hall/Hicks would undermine Brown. And it severely ruffled the feathers of their single largest donor, Joe Jamail, who also happens to be Mack Brown's personal attorney and agent. Last week, there was 6-3 vote by regents reaffirming Powers. That attempt to oust Powers was fueled by Hall.
Now people are acting like, well Brown is gone so it's back on. It's much more complicated than that.

If true, this is why they will not get a top coach.
