The redemption of Josh McDaniels

Not exactly an LSU coaching search topic, but certainly a guy whose gonna get a lot of looks for NFL jobs this offseason and probably some college looks as well. Really good article despite the source, it's a long read but it highlights learning from his mistakes and changing what you do (which is something that would be attractive to LSU for any coach it hires).

McDaniels and Kiffin have similar stories and redemption arcs that may be realized this offseason
both are still ridiculously young for HC candidacies

How did Charlie Weis work out for ND?
Posted on 9/29/16 at 11:13 am to SlowFlowPro
Difference between Kiffen in McDaniels is that Kiff was a disaster at 3 different places (in different ways) and Josh was only bad at one place
In hindsight, the Broncos giving him full operational control is frickin insaneeeee.

yeah he had no GM experience and no HC experience and was my age right now
i mean what the frick
that was kind of the trend at the time and i have no clue why it was. wasn't raheem morris also hired in the same general timeframe?

Yeah I'm not even sure where that trend got started because unless I'm blanking I can't think of that situation working for a team before that
Closest I can think of is John Harbaugh but he had one of the most respected GMs in the league behind him
I think that was right after the Petrino/Saban disasters so the league was in that "WE ARE NEVER HIRING A COLLEGE COACH AGAIN" mode and so they went towards still green Coordinators and giving them the keys to the castle

The Patriots will probably promote McDaniels to head coach when BB retires.

Is McDaniels willing to wait 5-8 years possibly? Belicheck has shown no signs of wanting to hang it up. The fact the he's going to take another job tells me BB is staying active for atleast another 3-4 years. Otherwise he would just wait it out

Pete Carrol was an offensive coordinator under Bellichek?
Posted on 9/29/16 at 12:29 pm to Jack Daniel
Carroll had been an HC at New England and NY Jets IIRC.

He was a career NFL coordinator who had two failed AFC East stints on his resume
Bill Obrien has made a nice head coaching career for himself off the Belicheck tree (also on the college level btw)
You're giving anecdotal evidence against JM, so I'm fighting back with other anecdotal evidence
None of those coaches have any indicator or effect on how successful Josh McDaniels would be

I'm trying to say that the appeal of Josh McDaniel is the system and not his coaching ability.
Posted on 9/29/16 at 1:08 pm to SlowFlowPro
wasn't his draft board insanely small?
Posted on 9/29/16 at 1:20 pm to Jack Daniel
Against BOB brought his own system out of New England and has had good success with it, on both levels
That entire article states where Josh tried to emulate Belicheck, and has learned how to do it his own way.

Penn St, after going through a child molestation investigation, has to take a chance on an NFL coordinator. Not LSU.
Posted on 9/29/16 at 1:26 pm to Jack Daniel
I explicitly said the topic was not about LSU hiring McDaniels
