I've read and heard conflicting reports about whether Tubberville was asked to leave, or resigned of his own free will.

I don't think you pay anyone $6mil if they resign on their own.

What do you think really happened, and how f-in stupid is Auburn for firing Tuberville?

None of the story makes sense. Administration says they were "shocked" by his resignation, but we all know that for whatever reason, they've been trying to kick Tubby's arse to the curb for several years now. It also makes no sense for the school to pay him the $6 mil on his way out if he resigned.

IMO, the guy was forced out, and they worked out a deal so he wouldn't have "getting fired" on his record. They paid him to keep his mouth shut. Auburn might be as scummy as Tubberville. frickem both.

I bet they told him to fire his offensive staff and he refused. With Tuby its always the OC that goes but he keeps the rest of his assistants in place. The next OC comes in and they got to deal with his crew. I think Tuby was lost on what direction he wanted to go on offense and there is little confidence he could correct the problems in the near future. Auburn if you dont look at the money made the right choice IMO. When you look at 6 million down the drain. You gotta scratch your head. Alabama's rise from the ashes got Auburn scambling.

I live in AL and I heard an interesting theory on the radio the other day. The host said that he believed that there was a stipulation in Tubbs contract that said that if AU began searching for a coach w/o Tubbs knowledge, then he could resign w/ the money. Dunno if it's true.

I have a source pretty close to the situation and the AD wanted Tubbs to clean house or else they were going to go in a different direction. Tubbs said he wasn't going to clean house and as a result was told he was no longer needed.

The "resigning" is nothing more than a show for the media. Tubbs saves face of not being "fired" and AU saves face for not "firing" someone who went 13-0 in the SEC just a few years ago.

That's a possibility. I know that the contract was on coacheshotseat.com or something like that because they would post copies of all contracts that they could get via the freedom of information act.

I don't think it was a health thing, Tubs came out and talked about those rumors earlier in the season and I don't think he is sick.

Personally I think he had talked to them on Monday and Tuesday about hiring a new staff or a new OC, and wanted to know if he did that if it would give him a pass in 2009. I can understand the reasoning behind that - what good coach is going to want to come to work for a head coach if the HC (and the staff as a whole) gets the ax at the end of the season. I feel confident that Auburn wouldn't give any type of assurance and so he quit.

Were there feelers out before, that's a darn good possibility. I don't think we'll ever know because the only ones who know what went on are Lowder, Gouge, Jacobs and Tubs/coaching staff. You know the administration will never admit to anything that makes them look bad. Tubs will probably keep his mouth shut just because that's the kind of guy he is.

Isn't Sexton his agent as well? Then it sounds like a clause that would have been written in after the Louder foolishness in 2003 when he went undefeated in 2004 and had them over a barrel. Sexton probably gets a piece of the bonus, gets Nutt's package bumped (more $$$ for Sexton), then waits a year and places Tubby elsewhere (another finders fee/cut of the contract). Makes you wonder when he is going to find little Nicky another job.

A person I know here is friends with him. He was fired and got the buyout. Auburn is trying to do damage control after realizing that firing a coach like that sends a bad message to other coaches.
