I don’t think Tulane’s defense was all they good but I may be wrong

Y'all already getting rid of Tosh's sorry arse?

They seem up and down on paper. They only gave up 10 to Kansas St and gave up 22 pts game which was closer to 20 pts a game excluding the USC game.

No but there are rumbling he won’t be calling plays.
He is even more useless in the NIL era. Technically Hampton is coming to be the safeties coach and might be co-coordinator.

The position open is safeties coach.
Matt Powledge, whom went to Baylor to become DC, was the safeties coach and Co DC.

Hampton was on the staff a few years here as the DB coach and did a decent job. Then went to Duke and wasn’t all that great. He returned as DC and the defense was awful his first season before they turned it around this year.
He’s a good rising young coach and seems to be a good motivator. His scheme is pretty basic, keep everything in front and force the offense to put together long drives to beat you.
I’m happy for him and wish he would have stayed at Tulane but it isn’t a huge blow IMO and honestly was expected

Tulane hasn’t given up 22 points per game as far back as I wanted to scroll. In fact, their best scoring defense was 26 per for awhile.
I know Lanning wants a DB coach that knows the SE and Texas.

Hampton’s defenses are definitely good enough to win in college football. This past year was probably the best defensive group I’ve ever seen at Tulane

I just want someone that’s going to develop our players. Oregon used to get players and you would see them improve year over year. I think what sticks out is the turnaround under him.

This didn’t take long

Hampton is probably your guy then. He struggled at first but seemed to do more with less. Tulane obviously isn’t loaded with 4-5 star talent

Tulane should go bring Lance Guidry back home

I think we’ll get a lot of interest but wouldn’t mind promoting LB coach Michael Mutz. He’s been here since year 1 and has done an awesome job

That’s a weird hire, not one I’d be real excited about if I was trying to be a playoff level team

Tosh is getting paid 1.7 million. This is a good hire for a co-coordinator that will have a higher paid coordinator on staff with him and a defensive HC.

Hampton's D improved in 2021 as the year went on, in contrast to the offense.
He plays a "keep them in front of you" defense. We rarely blitzed and often rushed only 3. That didn't work well against Caleb Williams, but it worked well against most everyone else. I don't know that a more aggressive philosophy would have been any better - Williams is really good. We had 8 TFLs and4 stops, the same number of stops USC got against us. We lost our best cover corner mid-year, and he was able to overcome that.

Thanks for the insight on 2021. The more I learn the more excited I get. Oregon has terrible 3rd down defense and Tulane did well there. Lanning uses simulated pressures, so I am not sure if we will stop that.

Called it. Love the hire. Marshall had the #4 defense by defensive efficiency in the country last year.
