It was something pretty benign like that.

His severe punishment comes from lying about it to NCAA and his own head coach apparently.

No that is not something benign. That is one of the rules that is heavily enforced, which is why he lied about it. You can not be seen in public with a recruit and everyone knows it. If I remember right they were at dinner or something. You can say the texting was a goof up and just say it was auto etc., but to be in person and caught is a huge deal.

Davis met juniors in person in a meeting set up by a Texas high school coach. He then lied about it to Alabama compliance and the NCAA. He was fired for caused and the NCAA hit him with a show cause for three years.

In the grand scheme talking to someone during a period you shouldn't talk to them is pretty benign and if you look at others who had the same infraction, but were honest about it, they received far less severe punishment.

I'm not saying it was correct, but he wasn't handing recruits $10,000 in McDonald's bags.

The NCAA bends you over a barrel if you lie and get caught lying.

eTA:

Regardless, the NCAA now says he's 100% eligible to resume all coaching activities after several years banned from the sport, but the SEC won't let it happen.

He was actually back to coaching at UTSA in 2017. But couldn’t recruit. He did that for a year and went to the NFL with the Lions. Had been there since 2018.

They absolutely do. They’ve blocked places from hiring freeze. Bama would have had him on the staff in a heartbeat if they could have.

Wrong, just because you read it on this message board does not make it a fact. The NCAA does impose "show cause" penalties from time to time which makes it difficult to hire individuals who have committed violations. The SEC does not have that power.

New to people like you who read something inaccurate on a message board and then repeat it and claim that it is a fact?

No, seen it for years, Sport, yours is just the most recent example.

If Nick Saban had gotten what he wanted, Hugh Freeze would be in Tuscaloosa this week helping Alabama prepare for its annual A-Day spring game.

It's what the former Ole Miss coach wanted, too.

The Southeastern Conference, though, wasn't in favor of that happening.

Alabama was one of at least five SEC schools that had contact with Freeze about on-field jobs this offseason. Saban wanted to hire Freeze as a co-offensive coordinator and position coach, sources told AL.com.

However, SEC commissioner Greg Sankey encouraged Alabama not to hire a man as well known for the personal shortcomings that led to his Ole Miss resignation as he is for his success as a coach.

But we can have Rehab bama hiring ANYONE IT PLEASES ... They play with different Standards then other institutions in the SEC

Freeze needs a Job , And anyone should be able to hire him. And he should get a 2nd chance.

Words matter, and the word "encouraged" does not mean the power to deny.

Sankey can call any coach or any AD at any time and ask that person to not hire someone, but he can't block it; and certainly his request would absolutely be taken seriously and may convince a school that is considering hiring someone to not hire that individual, but he has no authority to veto a hire. And that's my point, people have read that article or something similar and believe the SEC has a power to veto a hire, when in fact it does have such a power.

Nick Saban mentioned pretty darn specifically that he tried to hire Hugh Freeze, but that the SEC wasn’t having it. The words are semantics.
