Is he making an enormous mistake? I know the recruiting class is important, and saving face is even more important. But is rushing the process the best thing for Tenn right now with such a huge hire?

This is why I think they'll settle for Calhoun. If they called he'd be on a plane to Knoxville within 30 minutes of hanging up. And I think they could probably name their price.

I don't think they have much of a choice. They have to counter/match the shock and awe pace of Kiffin's departure, Pete Carroll's depature, etc. Plus, rightly or wrongly, the fans, the current players and recruits all expect instant action.

The scuttlebutt but in Knoxville is that if Calhoun is hired, most of the recruiting class will bolt..

That offense isn't what many of the players want to be stuck with...TIFWIW

I dont get this at all. Calhoun is a USAF alum and after seeing him interviewed on College Game day he seems weird as shite. Not the type of guy you would expect to be the face of a top tier SEC school that has to recruit nationally to compete.

UT needs to bring in an outside group to manage this hire, then relieve Hamilton of his duties.

He really wouldn't be my first choice either. But the timing of this is really bad, and they seem to be making a lot of noise about him. I think they may settle for him out of sheer panic. And alum or not, the UT job is a definite step-up from the USAFA job.

I told someone that if I were the A.D., I would hire a lame duck coach unless I could find a suitable replacement for Kiffin. I would tell the lame duck coach that he would coach the 2010-2011 season without any chance of remaining the head coach after the 2010-2011 season.

I would then conduct a thorough search. They would have the first choice for a head coach next year.

Kiffen really screwed them. Save an enormous hire, the recruiting class will suffer tremendously anyway. There's no need to rush into a hire and compound an already unfortunate situation, because if you make a rash decision, it will set the program back a lot longer than the loss of one or two recruiting classes.

I agree, I have always believed that it is okay to suffer one mediocre recruiting class to make the right hire. If he is trying to rush this hire then the AD with a wrong hire could set the Tenn program back a lot more than suffering through one mediocre to low recruiting class.

On the surface that would sound like a good plan to go with. However, you'd have a hard time selling that one to the fanbase. What you're basically doing is telling them that you're all but conceding the 2010 season, and that wouldn't play well with a lot of folks. Especially when you were the AD who hired the douche (Kiffin) that put you in this situation to begin with.

Also, unless you reached out to somebody on their way out anyway (i.e., Fat Phil), you'd have a hard time finding a coach who would agree to come in for one year and then just fall on his sword for the university.

You would catch hell from several directions. The fan base, the local media, and, most of all, the national media. ESPN and all of their "dynamic" personalities would kill the A.D. for choosing this course of action.

It would be difficult, but it's without a doubt the best course of action if you cannot find a suitable replacement quickly.

The problem is that you are putting not just one, but two recruiting classes at risk. I think it is more important to find the right guy, but an interim coach for a full year is a bad idea imo.

I'd probably go after Dan Mullens or Golden. If they turned me down I'd hire Ogeron as HC for two years to recruit major talent, then can him and bring in a real coach to coach them up. I mean it worked for Ole Miss.
