Why do people believe everything they read? He left on his own terms. He pretty much didn't coach in that game against West Virginia because he knew he was leaving. Chavis did the same thing in the bowl game against Notre Dame. He left because of philosophical differences with the head coach. Here is your reason for the decline in defense and why he left. Will be the same experience Chavis will experience at Texas A&M.
Swinney said his expectations for defensive play have not changed despite hiring an offensive coordinator whose up-tempo philosophy increased possessions, thereby inflating yardage and points allowed while testing depth. Clemson's defense was on the field for a program-record 986 snaps this season. Swinney said Clemson's poor third-down defensive performance helped keep teams on the field.

Clemson had the number one defense in the country this year

What? Steele left clemson after the 2011 season. The next DC there is venables who has improved their defense that steele left.

I've twice posted an article discussing Steele at Clemson. A few threads along that line have been whacked tonight so I won't link it again. But it wasn't pretty. A bad situation from the sound of it.

That's a nice way to say you're fired.

I saw a deer commit suicide one time by running in front of the car ahead of me. Poor bastard just wanted to leave this world on his own terms.

Clemson ran a fast paced offense which turned over the ball 24 times including 4 times in the WV game. Stat wise Oregon just gave up more yardage to Ohio St. than Clemson did in that game against WV. And the level of competition in the ACC does not compare to the SEC. Just like Oregon would not have the best offense in the country if they played in the SEC. If you are going to base his career on one game then you must not remember Saban losing to UAB. Or better yet him losing to UL Monroe.

You LSU guys are freaking out and for good reason. Steele was a train wreck at Clemson and most Clemson fans could not have been happier when he was replaced with Venables. Whether he was fired or not is semantics. They are our 2nd biggest rival and we pretty much torched his defenses. Obviously the final straw was giving up 70 in the Orange Bowl to West Virginia. Going back further as a head coach he nearly single handily destroyed Baylor's football program. Maybe he does better at LSU but his track record sucks. You guys have been riding high for the better part of 16 years since Saban was hired. Nothing lasts forever. Look at Tennessee.

From what I read, the offense in the last game he coached as DC fell completely apart. It was a complete team fail--the defense did give up over 500 yards, though. Everyone is pointing to that as a black eye, but that is one game out of many. I have a "wait and see" approach, but I will cheer 100% for the team and not take on the negativism a lot have on this plank.

they gave up 49 points in the first half. Forty-nine. Forty. fricking. Nine.

quote:You are definitely right. Nothing last forever and we have had it great since 2000. I think we are overdue for a stretch of bad years. But hopefully a total change in the coaching staff will come out of it.

Maybe they should have scored more than 21 points. Shouldn't have been that hard

Base it off that whole season, he still sucked. Convince yourself however you have to though.

It's no coincidence that this year they have the number 1 defense, while this year also being their first one in a while to rank even top 80th in the country for time of possession(they were 34th). It's because Dabo and the OC realized how TOP can affect the defense.
FWIW several people have already said that other factors were involved with Clemson that year. No surprise how people overlook their defensive rankings his first two year there, it's not like those are a fluke, nor is his entire coaching career.
If Corey Raymond is excited to learn from Steele, then I'm sure he has plenty he can teach the players.
