This describes several possible candidates.

Would take Joe Brady before Kelvin at this point. Kelvin needs more experience.

Hes only coached a few years, this is his first as a coordinator and has never been a head coach.

This seems like forcing someone into the equation

Young and hungry. He will be getting NFL HC looks in the very near future. LSU should lock him in before that happens.

Timing doesn’t fit. He is just halfway thru his only year coordinating where he took over defense built by Glen.

For college and taking over a program that fired its coach he needs a little more time to develop and prove his organizational and team building skills along with coordinating skills.

If he took over a program set up like Saban left LSU for Miles he could take over a working machine and then focus on coaching while learning the rest, but I don’t think Kelly’s system sets up anyone for success.

In the NFL a lot of organizational crap is handled by the GM and other executives, and they also provide varying levels of oversight over hires and personal (too much with Jerry). Sheppard also spent 8 seasons playing in the NFL with different organizations along with being in his 5th year at the Lions at different positions, so I can see the NFL happening quicker if he maintains Glen’s level of success running the defense while adapting to personal charges and other variables for more than just half a season. The only time he did something in the realm of college coaching was player development one season for the freaked up covid season at LSU when Ed didn’t give a shite about football and Ryan Clark was allowed to spread dissent amongst the players for political reasons.

If Kelly had lasted another season or two, and then Sheppard wanted to coach college I could have seen it happening. Just half a year as coordinator with all his coaching under same organization and head coach isn’t enough time or experience to jump back into college implementing and running a big program with all the politics, donor arse kissing, and NIL with transfers in and out. Timing is just off.

Just listened to a podcast with T-Bob, Fehoko, Brocker, and Brandon Taylor. They all believe Sheppard is the kind of leader LSU needs and think he'd do a great job. They said LSU is his destnation job and LSU could have him for as long as it wanted him. Kinda got me pumped. These guys know more about what it takes to have a solid program than your average ranter so I'm at least listening.

They also talked about Kelly (have never heard a good word about him), Moffitt (a players coach that they loved). These guys bleed purple and gold. The video is long but the Sheppard convo starts at the 23:50 mark.
