thats an interesting way of framing his tenure. Yea, the 90s ultimately weren't kind to donahue. But a lot of programs would have been more than fine with the 80s that UCLA had under him

I will give him credit for one thing, and it was something I loved watching. He definitely had a knack for spanking the shite out of much higher ranked Big 10 teams whenever he got to the Rose Bowl. I loved how he made the 85 Iowa team look pitiful.

I was wrong about Chip's second foray into CFB, but actually he and UCLA are a perfect match. He doesn't seem all that motivated to make UCLA a powerhouse, and UCLA isn't that interested in investing to be a powerhouse.
