Some Reading on Mike Sanford

Sanford wouldn't be the sexy hire fans are clamoring for, but the guy is a good football coach.
Some essentials:
-65/35 run/pass split
-Simple reads and checks
-Emphasis on being physical
-Shotgun based offense
His track record seems mixed, and he definitely prefers a QB with some mobility to him.

ETA: Biggest takeaway for me, is that this guy has an identity. A big problem for Gary Crowton is that he doesn't use base plays (something he openly acknowledges). If you look at the great offensive minds (Malzahn, Leach, etc.) they almost always have 9 base plays that they just run out of different formations. It makes the offense simple to run and difficult to defend. I'm not saying Sanford is that brilliant, but he does know what he wants to accomplish where as Gary often seemed to just have a bunch of stuff he wanted to do working toward no goal.

weren't Urban and Charlie Strong also on Davie's staff? not to mention Greg Mattison. they don't seem to be any worse for the wear.

There are very few guys our fans would be authentically be content with and all it takes is a few games where our offense sputters before they want to turn on him.

I really wish we would go more under center, I'm not a huge fan of going all shotgun but if the offense works, I'm happy. And especially if it limits the sacks going shotgun I guess that would be nice as well

He was solid at Utah but from what I've read he's a spread option guy. I thought our offense was going in a different direction.

I never understood the hate for the bubble screens, at least they worked most of the time

So I'm not a logical fan because I don't want a 65/35 split? Please. Don't be one of those guys who can't hold a halfway intelligent conversation with someone who disagrees with you.
65/35 is a HUGE differential. How many teams do you think had that large of a differenential this year? 10? 15?
It is ok if you want to run the ball that much. My opinion is that given the quality athletes LSU has at WR year in and year out a balanced attack makes the most sense...certainly not 65/35. If I was OC, am starting Mettenberger and stretching the defense vertically. I am using the running game to set up play action. And I am attacking the middle of the field with crossing routes.

LSU ran a 75/25 split in the Cotton Bowl. Just saying.

You'd be surprised...
8 of this year's top 25 offenses had a 60/40 split or higher (either run or pass favored).
11 of them had a 55/45 split.

I agree 7thWard...I want to run the ball. A mean, nasty offensive line and hard running backs suits me just fine. Run that clock and wear that defense out. People who want a dominant defense (who doesn't) want to run the ball early and often. Because the best defense is a rested defense. The two statistically best defenses in Superbowl history ('85 Bears and '00 Ravens) had staunch running attacks. This is not by coincidence.

Without ever seeing him in practice? Please. Play action only works if you have hurt the D with running. Just running a few plays to give the QB's arm a little rest is useless. Why not attack downfield on the perimeter? The middle gets crowded. Interceptions are more common in the middle. You get more 1-on-1 situations on the edge.
