Muschamp wants to give the Tigers the opportunity to make a counteroffer, which is expected to be close to $400,000 annually.

I believe this is a very good move for Muschamp. It's not about which program is better, but which program has the most to offer him at this time. Some of this has been touched upon above.
First, it lets him be his own man in running the defense. He has worked for two defensive coaches. While I would guess that Tubbs is more collaborative, he is every bit as good as Saban and it is clear that AU's defensive schemes are his. TX will be the Will Muschamp show.
Second, program management is more than just x's and o's. There's recruiting and booster relationships and no one is better than Mack at these. My guess is that Muschamp could benefit from some smoothing of the edges.
Third, wrt recruiting he will now be able to develop broad and deep relationships in the state of TX. That will give him a solid base from TX to FL and GA which will enhance his value to any school.
Fourth, moving to another conference greatly increases his exposure. More schools, AD, and fan bases will be able to appreciate his work.
I think Muschamp is building a resume that will get him a shot at a high level program. In the SEC, the best programs (imo, LSU, AU, AL, GA, FL, and TN) are set at HC (possible exception of Fulmer) for the next several years. FSU and Miami seem set. It's best that he broadens his horizons and make himself appealing to the greatest number of teams. TX does that, but AU doesn't and neither does LSU given our current situation.
