Tim Brando on wwl radio this aftenoon quoted Miles (in a taped interview to be played tomorrow morning) as saying he wants to run both spread and pro sets...which is pretty much what he has wanted crowton to do all along...

ever heard of the run and shoot? the "spread" has been around a long damn time. to me, we need to be pro style that can spread the field when needed.

He is referring to OCs that "specialize" in this.

I second this motion.

Agree, if for no other reason than that it does not fit with the Les Miles philosophy. I don't doubt that Les may be looking for a spread OC, but this would only confirm my suspicions about Les's reasoning skills.

The spread (or spread option since you mentioned RR) won't work in the SEC?

Exactly what offense does Auburn run? Florida? Last I checked they were two of the last three national champs.

What was it Oregon was running the other night AGAINST AU to the tune of 449 yds?

Call it whatever you want. I just don't want LSU running it.

That's fine...I was responding to the "it would get blown up in the SEC" part.

It will work with the right QB.
There aren't too many Tebow's and Newton's though.

Tim Tebow and Cam Newton.

Great example. This is what the spread is good for. Lots of yards, but Oregon couldn't score two touchdowns inside the 5 yard line. The spread has major limitations when played against better athletes.

Fair enough, but like I said Oregon had a pretty fair night on O Monday night without either of those guys.

LSU won it all in 07 running a TON of spread.

Fair point, but more because of piss poor play calling, wouldn't you agree?

agreed. especially with two pro-style QBs in Mettenberger and Rivers coming in the last thing we need is an OC who specializes in and only runs the spread.

The 'it works great between the 10 yard lines' offense.

No. They had very limited short yardage options. The Saints had the same problem this year (and especially last Saturday). You have to have a running game. And I'm not talking about read option or the gimmick of creating running space because of the spread. Darron Thomas probably scores against most PAC-10 teams on several of those play calls. Auburn's SEC talent was just too much. I'm talking about a valid power running game. Don't get me wrong, the spread is very efficient and a good coaching maneuver for a limited talent pool, but it has severe limitations.

Worked pretty well for Ohio State against the Hogs didn't it?

Look, I'm not saying it's my preferred offense...just that this "it can't work, it'll get blown up in the SEC" stuff just isn't true. shite LSU has hell defending it. Keep in mind UF won their 06 title primarily with Chris Leak as their starter.

Yeah sure...it works with the right players...ie Tebow, Newton, Pryor...but couldn't that be said of a lot of different offensive philosophies?

For instance, if Ryan Perriloux had stayed at LSU, would everyone have wanted him running a pro style offense or some version of the spread?

If we didnt have a retard for a QB it would work. We set school records in 2007 in the same offense

Auburn blew up the line of scrimmage which eliminated the option to read, and closed fast when Oregon got in space. One problem we had vs. Auburn was we tried to stay at home which allowed them to execute their blocking schemes, should have gone for more disruption.

Bobby Petrino aims for the type of offense that merges the spread passing attack with the ability to power run.

If you wanted an offense like this, you could probably get his brother for a hefty raise. He's making about $500k as Illinois's OC I think, so it might cost you close to a mill but it could be worth it.
