What if they found things that the NCAA wouldn't have? Could they have incriminated themselves while trying to oust Pruitt cheaply?

The NCAA doesn't have subpoena power. So they could go to UT, ask what they found, and UT could just say "frick off" and the NCAA wouldn't be able to do anything about it besides open their own investigation and try to find that stuff themselves.

I think Napier is the answer here. Just read he’s from Cookesville, which is an hour away from Knoxville.

Maybe the reason he turned down SC and Auburn is because he knew something was up with Pruitt

You have me confused with someone else. I don't make coaching predictions.

Someone is offended because LSU told their guy thanks for coming, but we’ll pass.

Would be a much better hire than Nielsen. He's been a dominant DC at a powerhouse P5 program.

Here’s the problem with that. If UT doesn’t pay Pruitt anything, then he’ll be out there in the wind and possibly ready to drop a dime on them if the NCAA calls on him in the future.

The smarter move would be to pay him a much reduced buyout with some kind of NDA attached. Then he wouldn’t be able to make a statement against UT to the NCAA since they aren’t a legal body that can break an agreement like that.

Then both are hindering an NCAA investigation meaning the NCAA can still punish both severely. The NCAA can't force anyone to cooperate, but they can punish you for failing to cooperate.

Snitching to the NCAA usually doesn't end well for the coach involved, unless you're Dan Mullen.

Lol wow. Didn't think they had the balls. Aren't they still paying Butch?

I don't think they had much of a choice. Recruiting violations were serious enough to have the NCAA look at "lack of institutional control" if they didn't do something drastic. Besides, by firing him for cause they owe him nothing.

I also heard it's not over. Players involved implicated other schools. Although, it might be to lessor degree since they didn't sign with them.

Leo Lewis signed with State. How'd that turn out for Ole Miss?

I get that, but they can threaten him with a show cause if he won’t. I guess they could do that either way, though. My point was that you don’t want him out there with info that can hurt you and a major ax to grind.

Tennessee assistants Shelton Felton and Brian Niedermeyer are also being fired for cause.

He can wait around another year or 2 until the right opportunity possibly opens up. Tenn is a dead end job even in the SEC. Hell, he'll have a good team next year and there's a possibility O gets fired after next season so it's not going to hurt to wait 1 more year to see if better opportunities open up for him. His stock will still be high. He has already told better destinations than Tenn thanks but no thanks.

But I've got a feeling that the Steele hire last week is no coincidence.

Some Blogger predicted a week ago that Tennessee would fire Pruitt, bring in an interim coach, then wait for Freeze.
That was my first thought when I heard Steele was hired.

Tennessee in its termination letter to Jeremy Pruitt: “Your failures are likely to lead to significant penalties to the University and has jeopardized the eligibility of our student athletes.”

My oh my. Things are getting juicier.

I have a nephew who follows everything UT and is on the pay sites and all their boards. I just saw him and asked about this, as he first mentioned this internal investigation was coming around Thanksgiving. He said they are going to get hammered and set back years. He’s not one to exaggerate, so it may get pretty bad over there.
