Steele’s not my choice. It’s unexciting. But he’s probably been the best DC in the conference over the last few years.
This isn’t some nail in the coffin people are thinking.
I still don’t believe he’s a real candidate though.

I doubt Steele would be bad enough to get o canned next year. Team will be veterans and I doubt we suck.

Here's the issue with Steele, or rather his scheme.
What he runs is quite complicated. It takes a while to learn. Up front and especially back 7.
A year with Bo where for most of the year (7 games?) they clearly didn't understand the system and even in the last 3 games there were many bad communifusions (communication + confusion) that cost points.
So is there tolerance for another year of that while they learn Steele's system?
Steele had problems at LSU because he knew he didn't have time to install his way of playing defense and he just ran Chavis'.
Now Steele is a better teacher and communicator (thus, coach) than Bo. But still, can CEO's career withstand another lost year. The mistake was hiring Bo which has put him in this "tolerance box". But it is what it is; that's a huge gamble at this point.
If I were him I'd risk a Dan Reeves before going this route. There's less risk in running a simple defense and relying on talent rather doing another complicated system swap.
Worth noting that while he isn't as wed to it as Bo, Steele also runs a pattern matching zone. He will mix it up alot more, which is one of the complications because his front 7 attack differently based on what the DBs are doing.
ETA: and there is no guarantee that we're not going to have limited practices in the spring (and summer) once again. One way or the other we will be installing something new to one degree or another; if we KNEW we'd have full off-season camps/drills, then maybe. But right now we don't know shite.

I agree. He’s not coming here. Getting close to retirement for him in Alabama somewhere.

Steele ran almost exclusive cover 1 man at auburn, and I don’t think there is anything remotely difficult about learning his scheme. It is really simple, by design, to let his guys play really fast.
Imo he is really good with great talent, maybe the best, but without great talent he is very average because he doesn’t mix his stuff much, so it is really easy to get predictable and winnable matchups for an offense. This year on third downs teams just isolated a guy on our slot or hit a rb out of the backfield on a lb because they knew they would be in man with no help.
His best games have been against the air raid, or joe Brady last year, because he really has to change and flex and mix things up, and he was great in those games. Most others it kinda is what it is and he either smothers you, or you crush him without a thought of an adjustment
I think he would do really well for you guys, but I also thought he was nearing a bad point at his time at auburn and probably ended before the big dip
