Not a sexy name, but why isn’t Dave Clawson getting any coaching carousel buzz?

Not sure he’s quite on the level of the LSU job, but the dude is an ELITE offensive coach. In 2019 he made Jamie Newman look like a star, and then in 2020, Newman couldn’t even beat out UGA’s walkons. And now this season wake’s offense is even better.

He has coaching chops (advanced numbers peg wake as having a top ~5 offense in the country this year), he has a track record (turned both bowling green and wake forest into winners), and he’s in the middle of a season as good or better than any of the other guys who are getting buzz.

Obviously he has never recruited with the big boys or consistently competed with elite programs, but I guess I’m not sure why he’s not getting any consideration as a half-level below Matt Campbell and mark stoops. Thoughts?

Using the word “sexy” in a coaching search is very disturbing and unsettling.

His overall record at Wake is 49-46. This is the first year in his 8 years there that they have lost fewer than 4 games. With that said he will probably get a look at schools like Washington or TCU.

To be fair, that’s a very good stretch for wake. And 49-46 is fairly similar to Matt Campbell’s 41-32. And Matt Campbell likewise has only one season with fewer than 4 losses.

I would argue that wake is a slightly tougher place to win than ISU given the heightened academic requirements.

Beyond that, he also took over a bad Bowling Green team that has been absolutely putrid after him and got them to 10 wins. Bowling green!

Doing it two times in a row at 2 programs with a degree of difficulty as high as BG and WF is incredibly impressive to me.

Wake Forest and Iowa State are both bottom 5 programs at the P5 level, along with probably Vanderbilt, Kansas and and maybe Oregon State.

Wake Forest also has the smallest P5 enrollment. There are high schools in Texas with more students than Wake Forest
