I'm ambivalent about this one. The evidence is there that he can succeed. However, three of the last four defensive coordinators we had (Torbush, Kines, DeRuyter) had decent track records as well.

In the last ten years, we have gone from a 3-4, to a 4-3, to a 4-2-5, to a 4-3, to a 3-4, and now to a 4-3. It's that consistency that has led to our defense successes of recent years.

To be fair, you can transition fairly well between a 3-4 and a 4-3 Over and a 3-4 and a 5-2 depending on the size of your outside backers. DaMontre Moore and Brandon Alexander can easily play DE.

Slocum: 3-4 throughout
Fran/Torbush: 4-3
Fran/Darnell: 4-2-5
Sherman/Kines: 3-3-5
Sherman/DeRuyter: 3-4

Also, during each transition until this one, there was a significant loss of talent at both DL and LB as well.
2002-2003: Lost Brian Gamble, Jerrod Penright, Ty Warren, Rocky Bernard, Jason Glenn, and Jesse Hunnicut
2005-2006: Lost Lee Foliaki, Tae Green, and Johnny Jolly
2007-2008: Lost Mark Dodge, Chris Harrington, Red Bryant, Misi Tupe, and Kellen Heard
2009-2010: Lost Matt Moss, that's it.
2011-2012: Lose Tony Jerod-Eddie and Eddie Brown, retain all linebackers, retain Jon Mathis and Spencer Nealy
