The AD just said probably no Interim Head Coach and if they do decide to have one that coach would not be considered for the head coaching position. Is this a slap in the face to Freeman? I thought he was the head coach in waiting. I figure Fickell is the favorite but if Freeman is available there is a chance!

How can they not have an interim? They could still go to the playoffs

That sounds like he knows he is hiring Freeman straight up

It could be interpreted as Freeman is going to be promoted to head coach, thus no interim

Edit: ya'll beat me to it, great minds think alike

Then why wouldn’t you just make him the interim and then the head coach at the end of the season.

No disrespect to Freeman, but you have Fickle on the board, and it would be silly not to hire him if he'd come to Notre Dame.

I think it's more of an indication that he is their guy.

Nobody does this anymore. It was a stupid fad that ran its course.

Yeah no kidding. Maybe they don't want to pay Fickell money.

They'd be nuts not to. He'll hang on to a bunch of their recruits, and it will be good for continuity. Freeman seems like a great coach and good guy. Great opportunity for him.

Probably more cathartic for them to go “we don’t need you we got a guy right here!” Immediately and start the recruiting earlier

Bit of an emotional decision, but I could see them leaning freeman for a number of reasons including staff and recruiting continuity

Maybe so. The tone of the speech was there will be a full search lead by the AD. I think it’s more of we are not going to put Freeman as head coach just to try and demote him back to DC because we are hiring someone else. That way it is not awkward and they try to keep him as the DC. I smell a possibility even though I think he is head coach at Cincinnati.
