small minded approach a bit. you would have to envision derek mason's defense with say Georgia's, Florida's, Alabama's, LSU's defensive talent.

What has Mason done over the past 3-4 years to show he would be a Top Notch DC?

His defenses have given up over 30 points/game 2017-20.

His recruiting has dropped off.

What makes anyone think this is the best hire for LSU?

How about we look at Vanderbilt's defensive rankings prior to and during Mason's tenure. Leaving out 2020 because it's garbage.

Prior (Shoop, who is a beast):

2011: PPG 29th, YPP 11th
2012: PPG 15th, YPP 16th
2013: PPG 44th, YPP 25th

With Mason:

2014: PPG 106th, YPP 81st
2015: PPG 22nd, YPP 33rd
2016: PPG 35th, YPP 82nd
2017: PPG 88th, YPP 83rd
2018: PPG 60th, YPP 103rd
2019: PPG 95th, YPP 117th

So it appears he had one really strong year in 2015 on the defensive side and the rest are garbage. But in 2015, he took over DC play-calling himself so that is a big plus.

But I fall back on how poorly he recruited compared to predecessor at Vanderbilt. I don't think he enjoys or is any good at recruiting.

He was a very poor recruiter at Vanderbilt.

Kinda hard to recruit there if we're being honest about it. I also think he wasn't a great fit there. The defenses did pretty decent similar to Mizzou considering the talent, but Vandy will never be that team that will consistently win 9-10 wins a season.

It’s been said ad nauseam in this thread already that James Franklin had just proven you can recruit there.

Good article talking about his defensive philosophy

Article from 2016

quote:

Mason believes in two-gap defenses at the college level. They are the best way to defend the read-option and attempt to shut down up-tempo spread offenses.

Vandy sports a two-gap scheme, mostly out of a three-man front

O says "naw naw" to 2-gap
