I would be 100% on board with this. Mason as a HC is wayyyy different than just a DC. I also see with his experience, this wouldn't be some 2-3 year stint if he is successful. He comes across as a guy looking to settle rather than jump ship so soon and that's what O needs. Stability like SE on the offensive side of the ball. I would be completely fine with Mason and Davis and keep Raymond.

He’s 51. Not old but I wouldn’t exactly refer to him as young.

I just don’t understand why Mason’s name keeps coming up for DC. He was a DC at Stanford during a time when the PAC-12 was down overall and only Oregon was really doing anything.

Offenses have changed so much since 2014, get somebody who’s currently doing it.

Mason would be a good hire. His defenses at Vandy werent always statistically great but they played smart.

Not worried about recruiting. O's got that. That was his biggest selling point, at least.

I believe our guys would play harder for Mason.

You should be.

We need a recruiter at every coaching position. Period.

Agreed.

CEO’s entire D-1 head coaching career rests on this next hire and he better get it right. At this point, his selfie-boo girl could make a better DC hiring decsion than Ed.

Successful defenses don’t look so not look the same in 2012 as they do in 2020.

I personally watched LSU throw all over the field to wide open uncontested receivers against Vandy.

I don’t care if you weren’t the DC... have some defensive pride.

This would be a TERRIBLE hire. O does not need safe picks. He needs guys that want his job. That’s when you have successful staff. When everybody is pushing to be the best.

I will never hold failing at Vandy against a head coach if you are looking to hire them as a coordinator.

I agree with you on this. I just feel uneasy overall about him, outside of Vandy. That job is a blackhole.

Oregon was running a modern college offense in 2012 and 2013 when Mason was DC at Stanford.

In 2012, Oregon averaged 48.5 points per game. Stanford held them to 14.

In 2013, Oregon averaged 43.8 points per game. Stanford held them to 20.

Mason has the chops as a DC.

Who isn’t? Players seem to love him. I’m willing to bet he’d be a great recruiter at a place like LSU.

Good article talking about his defensive philosophy

Idk if it was modern. They were running crazy tempo which no one was, but I don’t think they were running anything that was that much more advanced concept wise.

Give me a damn DC that can make IN-GAME adjustments. If that's Mason, so be it. Those of you bashing Mason, well Kevin Steele was horrendous at Baylor, now completely different at Auburn, guess what changed for him, TALENT.

At the time it was. They were running an offense that looks more similar to current offenses than any other team. They were running the RPO before anyone else was.

His predecessor James Franklin was FAR better at recruiting to Vanderbilt. Mason destroyed all recruiting momentum Franklin brought to Nashville.
