David Johnson appeared on 1500 AM ESPN in Minneapolis on Wednesday and was asked about the candidates to replace coach Tracy Claeys, who was fired Tuesday.

“Well it depends upon what they want to do and how hungry they are and what opportunities they have. The market is going to determine what salary and benefits are being paid,” Johnson said in the interview, which you can listen to below. “And you know, there’s all kinds of names, you know, from Chip Kelly and Sumlin and [Western Michigan coach] P.J. Fleck. The list goes on and on.”

Sumlin would be a disaster at Minnesota. The only reason he remotely is successful at texas a&m is because the speed and talent he recruits covers up horrible playcalling.

Sumlin with a bunch of slow, plodding skill position players is a 4-8 type program.

Yeah I don't know why Fleck would seemingly take a hard pass on Purdue but jump at Minnesota. He could land somewhere bigger with a another really good year next year

Minnesota's division is the weaker of the two in the Big 10...

I'm surprised so many people on here think Fleck should wait for something better. It's not like Minnesota is a bad job now. They just won 9 games, play in a weaker division and have their new stadium to fill. He could be successful there right away and then move on if he wants.

Meanwhile, WMU will be breaking in a new QB, Corey Davis will be gone and they have road trips at USC and Michigan State. And running the table again in the MAC isn't easy; not even NIU could repeat after an Orange Bowl appearance and a Heisman finalist at QB.

Will Fleck still have the same luster if he goes 8-4 at WMU next season and other hot names emerge that aren't on the radar yet?

If he goes 8-4 next year with all the stuff you previously mentioned, his stock will still be rising, not vice versa

Did Herman have the same luster going 9-3 this year? Herman had a couple of big wins but the shine won't just wear off Fleck unless they really tank

Sumlin isn't the primary play caller at A&M and hasn't been since he was promoted to OC during RC's last year...

So the playcalling isn't horrible?

The playcalling wasn't bad under KK or Mazzone at all, often it was pretty damn good. It was ok but nothing special under McKinney.

Spav was off and on but he didn't seem to be good at calling plays based on what his players can do and really got thrown off if his gameplan needed to be adjusted.

So no, it hasn't been horrible and anyone who thinks that is just full of hyperbole or is a fool who thinks when a play doesn't work it must be b/c it was a bad call and not b/c the players didn't execute.

Can you give an example of a hot coaching candidate whose stock stayed relatively high after taking a step back in the MAC? The only one I can think of is maybe Turner Gill and he ended up at Kansas.

Fleck would have to beat USC or even MSU to keep his stock up. Or at least win the MAC again.

There's your answer. Plus the AAC is a stronger league than the MAC. Herman can also point to his successes as a coordinator.

Fleck's biggest win at WMU might be the Northwestern game to start the year. And he was a career position coach before going to Kalamazoo.

Not just talking about offensive playcalling.

I'm including all playcalling, to include having a kicker who is shaky beyond 50 yards kicking a CAREER LONG on 4th and 2 when you're down 5.
