Don't know much about him, except him being here as head coach, and then some time in the NFL. Any thoughts on him, his schemes, passion etc..

Was in way over his head as LSC coach. It took us years to overcome the damage done by his "recruiting" or lack there of.
Was the youngest coach in D1 when he was at LSU and as far as I can tell has never even sniffed another HC job in over 15 years.

Yea, his time at LSC was atrocious

His first game at LSU as HC was a rain game. That evening, he prevented Tiger Band from performing the pregame. I hated him from that day forward.

He signed a bunch of really questionable athletes including three total head scratchers from Catholic High.

He did a great job at UK coaching defenses. This was post-LSU years.

I guess the question is, would we consider him as the DC? Tough one...as you pointed out, he did have some success after LSU, but I don't know if he is is the answer we are looking for. He did alright for a year as HC for LSU, but then did a terrible job recruiting. I remember Grant Teaf of Baylor even saying that LSU was going after Texas kids that no one else was recruiting.

We chose him over Steve Spurrier as our head coach.

no we didn't, we didn't have an AD, didn't do much of a search. retroactive rumor has it SOS wanted the job, but that's about it.

I think the rumor was that BA and the players solicited for Archer while SOS was at Duke. Then BA turned around and hired him at UF.

The obvious highlight of his career at LSU lasted 7 seconds in the Earthquake game.

Archer was promoted by Bill Arnsparger. He thought he was ready and he was not. Old story.......Sam Ritigliano (Old Cleveland Browns Coach) thought he had the job, as he was promised by the Alums. After his interview he is taken to Chris's Steak House. Everyone is celebrating that he will be the next LSU HC. He looks across the room and another big table of guys surround Steve Spurrier. LOL! That's coaching.Archer got the job. Nothing is done until the contract is signed. Archer is not the best, by any means. He makes the rounds which is smart.

His defense at UK was one of the worst in the SEC. Check out the last line in the link.

Archer sucked and still sucks - let it rest, let it rest......
He went after TX kids that Texas and Texas A&M did not pursue at all and then signed three gay bears from Catholic High in the same class!! Look how they worked out - LOL - Leo Abel??? Scott Ray??? and Daigle (son of one of the coaches) they SUCKED arse!! I do not even think ULM or Southwestern LA (name at the time) had any interest.
Archer sucked and still does - get over it and let it rest

Not exactly. Arnsparger recommended that Archer be his replacement (which was followed). Rutigliano, Spurrier, and Mike Shanahan were the other guys who were supposedly on the short list.
Shanahan was one of the hottest coaches in the country and became Head Coach at the LA Raiders, then Denver, we all know was Spurrier did, and Rutigliano took the HC job at Liberty University for 11 seasons.
The epilogue to this little story is: Arnsparger's next job was the AD at the University of Florida. His big, lasting contribution to the University? Hiring Steve Spurrier to be the head coach for the University of Florida.

He is a solid defensive coach, and is particularly good with linebackers. Hindsight being what it was, LSU would have been much better advised to give Archer 2 or 3 more years, rather than hire Curley Hallman.
To put in perspective how young he was at the time, Archer is less than four (4) months older than Miles.

quote:It definitely wasn't Saban level defense, but it wasn't the worst. Wiki isn't exactly the authority on this stuff. He did a decent job at UK; I lived in KY for a lot of those years and remember the difference he made when he got started. That being said, I don't think it would be smart to bring him back to LSU.

Arnsparger screwed LSU with that move.

Sure, that would be great. Archer at DC and then nag Mumme for OC. What other has-been (or never-was) could we replace CLM with?
