Michigan State coaching staff

I was looking at their staff just curious as to who Tucker's assistants were and I saw this. Their DC position is called the "Secchia Family Defensive Coordinator" I have never noticed this before. I know different ppl will make big donations to the school and get things named for them. At LSU there are several gates into Tiger Stadium named for a family or such. But a coaches title is sponsored by someone? SO I wonder if these ppl are paying that coaches salary? If a coach under performed could they threaten to pull funding?

It's no different than giving a big donation to name a meeting room or an office.
They probably sold naming rights to that position for like $50k (made up number), but there's no ongoing funding for it.

Everything is for sale in programs that don't have a handful of primary big money boosters.

Lots of universities have what are called "endowed chairs," in which a big donor gives the institution a big donation, with the idea that the interest income from that donation goes towards the salary of the person holding that position. It's somewhat similar to a company buying g Naming rights to a stadium.
Many major orchestras, such as the Cleveland Orchestra where I live, have the same thing. Actually, at least a third of the CO'S positions are endowed.
I've never seen this strategy applied to a football team, but it could certainly work as a fund-raising tool. The endowment is to fund the POSITION, and is not tied to the individual holding the position at any given time.

Stanford’s OC is the “Andrew Luck Director of Offense” and their DC is the “Willie Shaw Director of Defense”. David Shaw is the “Bradford M. Freeman Director of Football”
