Michigan fans with ears around the program are scared shitless right now.

They're hearing that the school's all-purpose "plan B" is to hire Carr crony Brady Hoke of Ball State.

They're all convinced it would do for Michigan what hiring Curley Hallman did for LSU in the 90s.

According to some people on a Michigan premium board, Miles hasn't been offered and never was offered(or at least never told the job was his)but he is interested and there has been some talking on both sides.

They are on lockdown up there at UM.

Maybe they aren't talking, I'm just telling you what I've read.

But, if they are talking, I am not surprised because of all of the backlash Bill Martin and Mary Sue Coleman have received for screwing it up the first time and it's likely Mary Sue Coleman took over the reigns of this search and has gotten in touch with some of Miles' folks.

Get ready for a media shitstorm if this is true.

I've long since discarded the idea any information can be considered solid in the ever-shifting sands of a coaching search, especially one as schizophrenic as Michigan's, but... yeah: several previously reliable people have told me that Mary Sue Coleman has gotten directly involved with the search and there exists a solid offer out to one Les Miles.

I was debating whether or not to mention this -- the fear of things falling apart and Miles talking about his damn strong team while talking about misinformation on MGoBlog, etc. -- but when I guested on EDSBS live to talk about the coaching search, Orson was not only unsurprised that Miles was still a possibility but named the exact hypothetical salary hypothetically offered on hypothetical Friday, $2.5 million dollars. So it's not exactly top secret anymore. Yesterday morning Sam Webb and Michael Taylor were discussing it on WTKA, too. A secrets go, this one is pretty open.

The set of things that seem most likely to be true at this time:

* Miles has an offer for $2.5 million a year.
* He's got a few days to consider it.
* The main hangups appear to be assistant pay and the role of Carr in his program.
* Martin has been at least partially usurped.

Thing which seems completely implausible but given the sailboat thing cannot be ruled out -- nothing can be ruled out anymore:

* The anti-Miles faction in the AD is pushing Brady Hoke heavily.

Thing as of yet undetermined:

* If Miles will accept the offer.

So there you go.

He is certainly not sick enough or working hard enough to not post on supatigah's thread on this board.

I think the Clement commit proves Miles isn't leaving. You can bet the question came up.

Paper thin. I don't think there's anyway in hell miles leaves for michigan. Something other than a blog would maybe give me pause but for right now he looks like he's basing most of his assumption on the shock he experienced when orson swindle guessed the supposed salary amount - he's easily amazed and probably TIVOs David blaine.

Looks like we are firing our salvo at Michigan

LSU athletic director tries to put Miles-to-Michigan talk to rest
by John Heuser | The Ann Arbor News
Monday December 10, 2007, 4:12 PM
University of Michigan athletic director Bill Martin received permission once from his Louisiana State counterpart Skip Bertman to talk to LSU coach Les Miles and didn't use it.

If Martin has any interest in talking to Miles now, the athletic director will have to ask again.

"I'd be under the assumption that the permission to speak to Les Miles has expired," Bertman said Monday. "We've signed the contract."

Though the contract extension signed last week is structured to keep the coach at LSU through the 2012 season, a number of former Michigan players believe that Miles could still be enticed to Michigan.

Bertman thinks otherwise, even going so far as to say he doubts Miles' college coach and mentor could have convinced him to depart Baton Rouge.

"If Bo Schembechler were here today, I don't think he could have gotten Les," Bertman said.

"I have no doubt that LSU will have Les Miles coaching next year," he continued. "I think there's a wonderful lifestyle here, and a wonderful institution and great facilities and a quality of life and a wonderful place to raise your children. I think that's what's keeping Les."

The athletic director said he understands why the Miles-to-Michigan clamor won't fade as the search to replace retiring coach Lloyd Carr drags into its fourth week.

"Les is a wonderful football coach, come on, he's a great guy and he could coach anywhere," Bertman said. "I can understand the interest, except for the fact that the contract has been finalized and signed and so forth. I think it's over in that sense. I know it's over for Les."

But Miles, who is preparing his No. 2 Tigers for the Jan. 7 national title game against Ohio State, could conceivably decide otherwise. If Michigan were to hire Miles, the LSU coach would have to pay a $1.25 million buyout, as stipulated by his contract.

First, though, there would have to be the conversation between Martin and Miles that never took place before LSU and its coach agreed to the contract extension.

Bertman, who called Martin a "very honorable and wonderful guy," said - as he did two weeks ago - that he'd be fine with the Michigan athletic director communicating with Miles through his agent, George Bass.

After being rebuffed by Rutgers coach Greg Schiano last week, and failing to connect with Miles on the first attempt, it's unclear what Michigan will do next. From Bertman's perspective, going after Miles would be fruitless.

No disrespect intended, Bertman said, but "if the guy from Rutgers turned it down, why can't Les?"

Yeah, I think it just might have been a little better if Miles himself would have issued that.
