Like so many of you, I am a life-long Tiger fan and today's official announcement of the Ensminger hire is disappointing, sobering, frustrating, and anxiety-inducing.

Let me first say that I have met Coach Ensminger on a couple of occasions, and I think he is a tremendous coach. He is bright and, in my opinion, a gifted play-caller. But being a good play-caller does not necessarily make someone a good Offensive Coordinator. It's certainly the most visible part of the job and it is extremely important, but there are so many other facets of that position, such as staff management, practice-planning, scheme installation, player development, etc.

But every one of those things stems from one key component of offensive football: PHILOSOPHY.

This is where Orgeron and Ensminger scare me. Obviously, the vast majority of us have been calling for a massive shift in offensive philosophy for the last several years. We were, as we know, promised that the best and most innovative coordinators in the country would be hired; and then, all of the sudden, we decided that one of the most innovative coordinators in the country was already on our staff.... coaching the TEs.

I don't want to see us operate in a phone booth. I want to see us utilize the width of the field to create more space for our athletes to showcase their abilities. I want to see an RPO perimeter game built into our run calls to keep the 7th and 8th defenders from factoring into the front in 1-safety structures. In fact, I'd like to have an explosive enough passing game to force defenses into 2-safety structures as much as possible. In the past, we have only been able to do that situationally (3rd and Long, etc.) I want to see a complete OFFENSIVE SYSTEM instead of just a collection of plays that don't necessarily counter a defensive reaction to a base scheme. I want to see an offense that utilizes blocking schemes that attack fronts in a variety of ways, including vertical and horizontal displacement on inside and outside zone schemes, and wash displacement on gap schemes. I want to see a passing game that incorporates vertical and horizontal stretches on both layers of coverage, and a QB that is well-coached enough to move his feet and eyes in rhythm with the called concept. In short, I want to see an offense that is on the cutting-edge.

Until we utilize the width of the field, we will never reach our potential offensively.

I don't see Coach Ensminger having the ability to deliver these things to us. We have been waiting for someone to bring this offense into the 21st century. Time and time again, we have either struck out or absolutely refused to budge philosophically. This is the concern with Coach Orgeron. I don't think even he knows what he truly wants offensively. It's also entirely possible that he does know what he wants, but he has definitely talked out of both sides of his mouth.

Will Ensminger do a good job? I think he will be ok. Is this a good hire? Absolutely not. Will he bring a true change to LSU's offensive philosophy? Doubtful. Many people have said that he isn't a bad coach. Of course he's not. He's a very talented coach. But in no way does that make him the right guy for the OC job.

I've been screaming for a spread offense since 2012. LSU brass clearly hates everything there is about modern offense as virtually every change they've made has been the complete opposite of ushering LSU into the age of modern spread offenses. It almost seems deliberate.

Been saying this all along. He said he wanted spread and a DT QB, then, out of the other side of his mouth, he wants the old 2000 era USC offense. And, you are correct, Steve is a fine coach, but not the one to take us to our full potential. Unfortunately, he is attached to 0 now.

I used to work with a guy who, when defending his scheme, would say, "We won a State Championship with this offense!" I would always tell him, "Yeah, 20 years ago! I'll bet the Backstreet Boys were still popular too." He didn't like that, but you're either part of the steamroller or part of the pavement.

That's not to say other offenses are not great schemes or that you can't win a championship with them. Take Wisconsin for example: they will never consistently recruit the skill guys that top-tier recruiting programs attract, for a variety of reasons. But what they do have are big, physical kids that play with an edge. Those are the types of kids they can attract consistently. So it makes sense that they rely on a "power running game" (I hate that term). That is their best chance to move the ball and win games.

But for us, with the high-caliber skill players we generally recruit, we can open it up a bit more, put those guys in space, distribute the ball on the perimeter, and let them do what they were recruited to do.

We fired a winning coach with an impeccable reputation who was stubborn but kept us in games we should win. WE then promoted his D-line coach to HC after every HC job he's had, he's been dismal at best. Said HC promises he's learned his lesson and will be hands off, only to fire a "genius" of sorts OC. HC then replaces with an unproven OC who use to be great at coaching TE's for a school that rarely utilized a TE in the passing game...

How sad is it that you have to settle with Canada and put a clause in to make sure Canada doesn't bad mouth LSU and recruits now that he is gone.

Pathetic!

I feel like if Ensminger was full control, the offense would be decent but nothing great. We all know that Zero will be meddling and calling plays. This is part of the problem with the hire, Zero hired someone who he will control.

The "Good Ole Boy" network at LSU needs to be blown up.

Philosophy is big and I question if it’s there. But it goes way beyond philosophy. Systems are developed over years based off of a philosophy, but usually rooted in tutilage under someone else running a similar system. They are then developed to fit coach(s), personnel, and the defenses they face regularly. See what Malzhon has done with his system. He ran tempo early on at AU, then realized its hurt his D, so now he adjusts tempo accordingly while running similar scheme.
I just think Ensminger is so far removed from all of that and doesn’t really want the job because he is aware of all of this!
