Larry Fedora -- why is he not on the list?

He certainly fits the profile of a successful coach at his last 2 stops, including a power 5 conference team. He is also an offensive minded guy.
He'd run Steele. Keep Cap'n Caveman and Frank Wilson and possibly Corey Raymond.
He'd publicly flog Peveto before showing him the door.
Profit.

You can bet your arse that Fedora, Mullen, and Wittingham would all get a serious look if Jimbo won't leave FSU. Add Herman from Houston, and you have a pretty solid list. You get past these guys......

If he could retain Ed Orgeron and Frank Wilson and also bring aboard Gene Chizik and Gunter Brewer, then we would be in business.
I'm starting to like Fedora more and more if the big names don't pan out.
Fedora is the first coach to win 10 games in a season at UNC since Mack Brown in 1997. Brown started at a small school, Tulane, and so has Fedora, Southern Miss.
Say what you want about Miles being compared to Brown in terms of potentially running a respected program into the ground, but Brown went 101-16 from 2001-2009 and was at one point one of the most successful coaches in college football.

There are a LOT of similarities between Miles, Mack Brown, and Phil Fulmer. Offensive guys. One title each, but each had shots at more and either just missed or lost in the title game. Conservative approach. High-level recruiters. Stubborn- to a fault in the end. Each dug in more rather than innovating as things began to fall apart. The exception being Fulmer's one-year Hail Mary switch to the spread, which assured his firing.

I know that. I think that the fact that all 3 won a title shows that they really were very good to great at their peaks. However, neither was winning at a high level in their last 2 or 3 seasons. The fact that it's hard to win a title doesn't mean that all 3 didn't have a decline in output.
Hell, Bowden and Bear Bryant were far better than all 3, and both of them had drops offs as well. Time catches up with everyone at some point. Bill Snyder and Nick Saban are the only two I've seen who somehow maintain their outputs consistently as they age. Even they will eventually start to decline, if they don't retire or pass away first.

I think every coach has a few down years, it comes and goes with the players. Every coach gets fired in the down years. The great melt will be when Alabama fires Saban for losing 3 games.

He was interviewed on the radio today in nc.
They asked why he did so well at usm but tanked at unc the first two years.
His answer paraphrased: " I just didn have the team ready and I blame that on myself. "
