I'm sure it is, and it might have been a case of Lane not caring if it was verified but the school wanted it so they paid the bill.
For the non twitter users, it used to be there was some system in place where a celebrity account would be verified it was actually them and they would have a blue check mark. When Musk took over, he made it a paid feature. I'm not sure if you still had to verify if it was you or not, but a lot of people decided not to bother with it.

It’s because he removed the Ole Miss logo from his name. Standard procedure with twitter when you change your name in any way
