UW sucked under Lake because of the abrupt departure Petersen, but DeBoer also was coaching in a Pac 12 that had become a joke overall. Then goes to take over a Bama team that was a playoff participant just 1 month earlier and which Saban had built. Oh and he lost to a bunch of unranked teams last year too despite that.
It was a good situation as far as program stability, but he also had to deal with a lot of those players leaving when Saban retired. He also inherited a very erratic qb who didn't fit his system. People forget in Saban's last season, when he had Milroe, he almost lost to a 4 win Arkansas and was a 4th and 31 away from losing to a bad Auburn team. Not to mention the stinker at USF, but Milroe was benched that game. Milroe cost Alabama quite a few times in DeBoer's first season. If he had been benched, Alabama more than likely wins some of those games they lost. But DeBoer was loyal to Milroe due to him helping keep the team together when Saban retired.

He’s like .500 against ranked teams the last 2.5 seasons though. Getting better.
Lane also racks up a pile of very ugly losses the past 2.5 years:
2024: UK, LSU, UF
2923: UGA 52-17 (didn’t we just fire a coach for losing this embarrassingly?)

I believe Lane would have a much better record against top 25 with the talent at LSU.
