Kragthorpe and Tulsa

Only because everyone that doesn't like the Kragthorpe hire keeps bringing up Louisville. That's it. No one wants to mention his job at Tulsa. Since you guys can bring up Louisville, why not bring up Tulsa?
Before Kragthorpe took over, Tulsa won 10 games in 5 years.
Kragthorpe won 29 games in 4 seasons @ Tulsa.
I'm sure this will be twisted as some CUSA, it doesn't take a good coach to win in CUSA, or some garbage like that.....
But be fair when you post. If Louisville is the only thing you want to bring up, don't bring it up at all. The guy was successful as a head coach as well.

No, and I even grant maximum leeway as to what happened at Louisville. I personally believe what happened was primarily the responsibility of Petrino. Even though I'm extremely skeptical of this guy, I think he would have been a fine QB coach.
The bat and mousetrap things are huge red flags. He did okay at Tulsa.
Can we not look at the whole resume Prom? He's had 9 stops in 20 seasons. He coached QBs at N. Arizona, BC, aTm and the Bills. He's OC'd at N. Arizona, N. Texas and aTm. He had 7 seasons as head coach at Tulsa and Louisville. Overall record as HC, 44-43. Meh.
I am completely underwhelmed by this hire.

Well, Tulsa was in the WAC when he got there, so he was WAC coach of the year in 2003 with an 8-5 record after going 1-11 the prior season. If he can do half the job turning around our offense that he did turning Tulsa around, we will have a dominant offense next year and strongly contend for the national title, because I don't think anyone is going to score on our defense.

No one denies his success at Tulsa, but if you are going to boast and account for his HC success at Tulsa, then it is only fair to also evaluate his HC performance at Louisville, otherwise you would be a hypocrite.
Also, his time at Louisville was more recent and one year there he actually ran the offense and called the plays. The following year he was fired after the program hit rock bottom.
Whenever anyone brings up Louisville, then the response is: well he was the HC and that's different from an OC so it doesn't count. With that thinking, both his time at Tulsa and Louisville should be discounted.
The bottom line is this: he was very successful as a head coach at Tulsa, and very unsuccessful as a head coach at Louisville. Will he be a great OC at LSU, we'll see.

good thing he is being hired as OC and not head coach. Please continue comparing apples to watermelons.

FYI, he will not be the head coach.

so record as a head coach doesnt matter when you fail because you are now OC, but record as a head coach when you succeed automatically translates to you becoming an awesome OC? Was he even calling the plays?
Shouldn't his success as Tulsa head coach be just as irrelevant as his failure as UL's HC?

chizik had a bad record and just won a title. Curley had a great record before LSU. Stop wasting your life trying to create a causal relationship when one does not exist.

I'd love to see a detailed write-up on his time at TAMU -- the only time he's been an OC at a major program.

No one cares about his record at Tulsa or at any stop. What matters is how the offense performed under him. As far as putting great offenses together, his resume is pretty underwhelming.

That's the point of the thread.
If the argument was that he was a terrible coach at Louisville, don't just mention that. Mention his success as well.
However you're going to argue your point, use them both. Or don't use them at all if you want to just look at his assistant track record. The majority of the time I've seen the argument about him being terrible was used only when he was at UL.
I read somewhere someone said it was posted that Kragthorpe was awful. Then proceeded to ask what kind of offense he ran.
I think that may be the best thing I've ever read on this board in the length of time I've been here.
The thing with Kragthorpe, with his record, I think everyone (some of us anyway) have no choice but to sit back and watch what happens. IMO, there's nothing saying he's going to be terrible and there's nothing saying he's going to be leading the country in offense.

I have no idea what you are talking about in that post. Krags is a great hire because his pee wee football offenses averaged 45.38 points a game.

i'd like to know more about where the offensive genius tag that landed him the UL job came from. Does anybody know if he called plays at Tulsa?

OBUDan had a thread with some of his numbers at aTm but I don't see it anymore. Dunno why it would have been deleted.

Charlie Stubbs was his OC at Tulsa.
The Nicholls St. head coach. Far from a "big name."
Look up Paul Smith's numbers as well. He had success under Kragthorpe. His best year was under Graham though. Regardless, if your name is not Jordan Jefferson, it's the norm to improve every year you're in college.

If Kragthorpes time at Tulsa was so great then why was his request to interview there declined?

Even more SEC/Tulsa trivia. The head coach that ran Tulsa in to the ground right before Krags got there was none other than Keith Burns, the brand new DB coach that Ole Miss just announced today that they hired.
