Mostly true in this case, but there is a reason.

Both auburn guys left and took a pay cut. Gus took a big cut, and took a job many thought was below his standard.

Gus was likely to take a paycut at all but the top jobs he was offered this year. Also Vandy was not going to pay him 3 mil, that was what he could get with all bonuses.

Roof was about to get fired and Chizik helped him save face like Miles did with the dynamic duo of Mallory and Peveto in 2008.

Are bama fans concerned at all that both coordinators are out job shopping just weeks before the NC game?

Anyone know the salary for the last USM coach?
Kirby is making around 900k with bonuses at Bama.

If Smart does not get a HC job this year then there is a problem in T-town. If a DC of a team that has played in the BCSNCG (on the backs of the D) 2 out of 3 years does not get a HC job out of it, then someone is blocking him. Everyone thought KS was waiting for the GA Job to open up, that is not happening now. Those stories about the OC not getting the Memphis job might be true.

It's not ideal situation, but you can not fault the guys for improving their status.

It is the nature of the business, has happened many times before and will continue.

I have no idea where you are going with this. I personally don't think Kirby will get a HC job this year, and as a Bama fan I certainly don't mind him staying.

How much more success will it take for him to get a HC job ? Some very good openings have come up this year, yet Smart has not been named a finalist in any of them. Is it because of coaching ability-NO. Is it because of ambition-NO. The perception is that something or somebody is holding him back.

so you have him turning down a HC gig if he has to take a small pay cut? I think he can see a little further down the road.

KS- Absolutely, thats what I do now at Bama

Or he just hasn't been the best candidate for any job he has sought. Or he has decided to be more selective about the job he wants. Or the school hiring him may worry that he is a DC in name only, but Saban is the real coach. Lot's of potential and more reasonable explanations other than someone blocking him.

I think that would be a good place for him. Actually, it might be the best place. They like to win, have a history of putting out quality football teams, it's in the South so he won't be working in obscurity.

Yeah, I hope he gets it.

Agreed. Kirby is not ready for a job like UGA or aTm. He needs 4 or 5 years learning how to be a HC and run that defense without someone above him making the tough calls. Excellent hire for USM if they can get him.

You sure about that? Kirby was not a serious contender for any jobs last year. This year he is getting some attention. I think most ADs still feel he is just running Saban's D. Perception is sometimes stronger than reality.

This year Saban has let it be known that he thinks Kirby is ready. Going out of his way to praise his game planning. Said the following in Nov.

quote:

Saban said Smart will make an "outstanding" head coach. "Leadership is really an important part of being the head of anything, a business or whatever it is," Saban said. "I think Kirby is a great leader. "He's done a great job with what he's been responsible for, which I think is also a big indication, because you have to have leadership qualities, the ability to demand that people do things the right way. and you have to gain their respect to be able to do it. He's done a fantastic job of that."

quote:

"The only way that people are going to be motivated to do a good job is if they have a chance to fulfill their goals and aspirations," he said. "That's part of the motivation for them to do a good job. I think that helps everybody in the organization to see that people have success and are sort of fulfilling their goals and aspirations."

Those close to the program say it is his defense, and he runs it. If he is waiting for the GA job to open up, it might be a long wait.

didn't say for a second he's a bad coach. Just IMO he's just Nick Jr, doing what his daddy tells him to do. I've never sensed for a second he does anything on his own and that would give me pause if I was an AD looking for a HC. He's an indian, not a chief.

Seems like he is a pretty good recruiter...he offers a program a lot on his recruiting alone...imo...

Roof left in order to not be fired...Gus left and took a base salary plus incentives greater than the 1.3 million he was making at Auburn...apparently his contract includes a home and several other incentives...I will try to find link again...

Smart wants the UofA job. He will have to have head coaching experience. It is a must and Southern Miss would be a good start.
