Now that Oregon is off the table, and SMU sounds like they are going in a different direction, it makes sense for Sumlin.

He's got big ties to Louisiana and the region obviously. Fertile recruiting ground. A chance to take a program with good resources and turn them into a G5 power. Sumlin would see major success at ULL and he would easily get some great athletes to commit to him.

What a lot of outsiders don't realize, is that there's some very big money waiting in the wings to be unloaded into the RCAF if this hire is made. Some big donors that left when HUD mishandled the locker room incident, are willing to come back larger than before with a quality hire. Our new AD, Dr. Bryan Maggard has the full support of the University President to get the right deal done.

And I know for a fact that he was at least contacted. I'll say no more for now.

That would be a massive hire for the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, but I don't see it happening.

It's not about being desperate. It's about taking a job that is not a dead end. He can make significant things happen with ULL and anyone who thinks otherwise... just look at what Hudspeth did in 4 years with 4 Bowl Wins. Hud's problem was just that he was not a very good "Coach" in the long run. He was just a motivator.

Sumlin is a FAR BETTER coach than Hud was, and Sumlin would be able to get more than 8-9 wins like Hud peaked at. I guarantee you Sumlin could get this program to 10 or 11 wins within 2-3 years and then take another job at a P5.

Read that ULLLL was pulling in 7-8K a game towards the end. Rather doubt Sumlin sees much there. There will be much better stepping stone jobs coming up next yr & in the meantime, thanks to the aggies' financial IQ, he'll be getting paid millions & millions of dollars to sit, wait, and pick. And he will not pick ULLLLLL.

Had to cheat, got NCAA sanctions, never won an outright conference championship and went to a garbage bowl game that only took ULL because it was down the road from them and eventually had to vacate 2 of the 4 wins. Damn strong program.

But he could likely sit out a year and land a P5 job next year.

He was winning 7 and 8 games a year in a tough division/conference. He's proven himself to be a decent head coach. Somebody will hire him. He doesn't need a repair job to prove himself like Kiffin did. The Cajuns roster isn't great thanks to Hud's weak recruiting. So there's a rebuild involved and yeah it would take him 2-3 years to potentially build a winner.
