Just curious ... did Kelly ever say "I will not be the next coach at ND"???

where are these "published reports" CFN mentions?

If true, I don't get this. I thought they wanted a defensive guy.

If so, why didn't they go harder after Meyer?

The only reason i don't agree with hiring a defensive guy at Notre Dame is because of what the defensive-minded, conservative Tressel has done at tOSU.. win close, low-scoring games against other slow, defensive football teams in the Midwest and then get stomped by a fast, athletic team from the South or California.
I think Rich Rod has the right plan to win in that part of the country, have to recruit well in the south and go for speed over size. If Kelly is the guy ND hires here's my prediction: in three years he amasses enough offensive talent and this (in addition to be a better leader and overrall HC than Weiss) is enough to get through ND's weak schedule with one loss to USC. ND will then meet LSU in the national title game and get utterly destroyed a la 2006.

If true, I think they really dropped the ball with this hire. ND is in a similar position as Bama was in 07. I think they should've tried to land a "name" to energize the fanbase and recruiting. I still think he's a terrific coach just at the wrong time.

I would've thought ND would back the Brinks truck up to Urb's house, but after reading the article it sounds like they didn't make much of an attempt to get Meyer at all.

i like him as a coach but if he doesn't coach Cincy in the Sugar Bowl im going to lose all respect for him.

Even if he does, it would be a half arse effort. He would be to worried about his new position. It puts Cincy in a tough spot.

I agree. I lost a lot of respect for Rich Rod when he pulled that. The kids work hard to get to a bowl game. They shouldn't be hung out to dry like that.

He would absolutely have to start recruiting immediately at ND, given how much they're losing, how much they need and how much of an uphill battle it'll be to start. I don't think coaching the bowl game should be an option.
This situation would be really interesting if Cincy were in the NCG.

Well, I don't know that I agree that you have to be as conservative as Tressel if you hire a defensive guy. If they had hired Stoops, for instance, what's to stop Bobby from going out and getting a hot young OC and running a wide open offense, if that's what they wanted to do.
I'm not saying he would have done that, I'm just saying it doesn't necessarily have to be one or the other.

been reading more and more about kelly over the past few weeks, and i was liking him even more
his vertical passing game would have been lethal with our talent

notre dame simply cannot do anything right. kelly is a huge gamble, one they didnt have to take.
