You know what people like? Winning. And he did that a whole lot in college. Who gives a shite how he is, or what he doesn't like to do. He fricking wins a lot of games.
With no drop off. I really don't understand what some people want in coaches.
The guy is clearly amazing as a CFB coach but people say "no thanks, he doesn't like recruiting. Makes zero sense to me.
There's plenty of guys that love recruiting and could never hope to build the type of program that Chip did. Chip can hire those guys to recruit for him. Recruiters are a dime a dozen.

I think what helped him sell UO was the Nike money flowing into that program. He was pulling talent out of a Texas that had no business going to play football in the Northwest. I'm not familiar with his coaching staff at Oregon but I know we lost recruiting battles with RBs that went there.

Spurrier was a coaching legend and Chip Kelly wouldn't be able to tote OBC's jock strap. Terrible comparison.

He didn't even try any hurry-up this year because his personnel was so bad. And they got better as the year went on. Damn near beat Seattle with seeding to play for with a 2-13 squad that never quit.
He did a borderline Top 20 job this season if you're paying attention.

Schef tweeted that Chip may stay in NFL as an OC somewhere

Firing Chip Kelly was dumb. Jed York is an idiot.

I think the big reason they didn't keep Chip was that they didn't think they could get a decent DC to come work for him

How it worked out for him was he got paid. But he's not about the money. The guy loves football. He will be coaching somewhere soon if he wants to.
He hit it just right at U of O. If you go back and look at his first couple years he was beating teams Oregon didn't really have any business beating based on talent levels. Oregon had an offense and other stuff no other teams had (like the unis, everybody has them now).
Success brought the talent. He might not have liked recruiting but he pulled in some of the top classes Oregon ever had. The offense got tweaked a bit each year and continued to succeed for the most part.
I would guess Chip saw the highest level of competition as a challenge, and probably liked the idea of not needing to find 26 new players each year and them keep them academically eligible and focused on one of their two part time jobs. He toyed with Tampa the year before he went to Philadelphia. But remember the Tampa owners were known as basically cheap at that point and desirous of kind of a "budget" roster.
So a year later he goes to Philly. Closer to home, maybe a better situation. But he didn't count on things like the DeSean Jackson situation, Riley Cooper, LeSean McCoy, and dealing with Howie Roseman. It's apparent he probably finally said something about Roseman throwing away a first round pick on Marcus Smith. Two winning seasons then 7-9 got him fired. One year after he got roster control.
So now Roseman's back in charge, picked up some pretty good pieces for Philly's roster including a really good young QB and 7-9 doesn't get Doug Peterson fired. Because he knows his place.
Chip didn't expect to be fired in Philly and probably not in SF either. But had he known, I don't think he would have done anything different. If you watch his career and listen to his interviews, he doesn't care what people think he should do. He does it his way. He is adaptable, but only when he comes to a realization about a need for change. Scott Frost said in an interview a couple years ago Chip Kelly had a saying "Praise and blame are all the same."
That's who he is. He doesn't care, he doesn't doubt himself and he'll do whatever he has decided is right regardless of what the outcome looks like. He called plays like that at Oregon a lot. A couple times it burned him, but he did it anyway.
I would guess he's a bit stunned but would not have done anything differently. Oh, and if you think he's "smug" you need to watch/listen to more interviews. He's very "east coast" getting one over on reporters when they ask stupid questions especially if it's something he already said he wouldn't answer or it's already been addressed. I kind of like it actually.
