USC football… talked to a few industry insiders this weekend about the Trojans’ search for the next head coach. Left those talks thinking James Franklin ends up with the job

Hope you want Mel Tucker then, because that's who LSU will be getting if Franklin goes to USC.

I believe if he leaves Penn State, it’s going to be to go to USC.

Which leaves Tucker.

I'd take Franklin over Tucker if those are my only two choices.

There’s been smoke around usc and Franklin for years. Seems like a logical time to do it now.

I would take Dave Aranda over Tucker every day of the week and twice on Sundays. They both have brief, but solid P5 head coaching terms that are headed in positive directions. Both seem to be intelligent and organized. Both have assembled good staffs (Aranda after adjustments this year). Both have question marks on whether they can sustain the level of recruiting we are used to and is required in the SEC West.

What’s the difference? It’s pretty obvious. Dave knows this program inside and out, knows what it will take to win here, and probably already knows what needs to be fixed and has an idea of how to do it. More importantly, he has some existing relationships with the people it will take to do what needs to be done. And for whatever his shortcomings as a recruiting closer are, he still has existing connections to all of the LA schools and coaches. Everyone around this program and the state knows and respects Dave Aranda.

When weighing a couple of roughly equal resumes, why would you not go with the guy who you not only know, but had a great relationship with when he was here?

Franklin knows he can't beat Ohio State.
He is looking for an exit.
