Yes, he is a "special case". The man said so himself in yesterday's Morning Advocate:

Coach O has never been a defensive coordinator and took a huge leap from usc D line coach to head coach at Ole Miss. D line coach for the Saints to college DC is a step up, D Line coach for the Saints to college D line coach/asst coach is semi-lateral if he wants to get back in the college game.
with Koenning, he's a big name at DC and anything besides DC or NFL gig is a step down.

I think a major thing with O in our favor is that I highly doubt he wants to move his family to Tenn considering he's FROM this state. I think that MIGHT buy us time to offer unless Coach Miles just decides he doesn't want him period.

Yes I am. I am and I will really like it. ESPECIALLY if we bring in O or Dunbar to be the DL coach (I'd prefer O).
Who would you rather? What's your case against Chavis because frankly he appears solid to me. Look at how terrible their team was (Wyoming.......really?!) this year and their defense was still something like 4th in the country (only one in the top bunch of defenses to have a losing season) and the percentage of their offensive drives that were 3 and outs this year was sinful

This year there record was 5-7 and in 2005 UT was 5-6. Teams are keeping the ball away from them and he can't stop 'em. That's why the rank is high and record is low. Also, Chavis plays soft coverage where they DB's are about 10 yards off the WR's. Tenn D has never been special except for when Jamal Lewis and Travis Henry were running the ball with Haynesworth, Henderson, Little, Willson and Grant playing defense.

Vic Koenning
DeWayne Walker
George Edwards
Frank Spaziani
Mike Nolan (not likely)
Greg Robinson
Pat Narduzzi
Ellis Johnson (not likely)
Brian VanGorder (not likely)

I think it's comical that people would even attempt to tear down one of the most successful, tenured, respected, experienced, brightest defensive minds in the SEC.
I don't care what scheme you run or how much talent you have, if you can survive as a coordinator for 15 years in this conference at a school where the fans are arguably the most fickle about wins and losses as any other school, then you're a solid coordinator. You've done SOMETHING right.
Chavis is a solid hire any way you slice it. Will he be the savior of LSU and lead us to the top of the countries defensive rankings? Maybe, maybe not. But he is nonetheless a solid hire for LSU and all knowledgable SEC football analysts agree.

No one's Defense is special w/o good players. Check the Rankings '95-'01 when we had good talent. And again in '05 w/ good talent.
I'd venture so far as to say that the numbers this year have occured w/o that same level of talent.

Chavis is better than what we have now, and I'm not saying he is solid, but I just don't view him as highly as the other guys I've listed. I like getting guys on the way up who are looking for bigger and better things, not the ones with no aspirations. That breeds complacency. Besides the defensive ranks are not that good lately and I haven’t seen him stop UF yet.

Florida had a grand total of 243 yards of total offense against Tennessee this year. Florida-Tenn box score
And Tenn is 4-7 against Florida since 1998 ... the most wins against Florida of any school in the SEC besides LSU in that time span.

UF also had less than 300 yards in the '05 game.
Everyone looks at the RUTS in the 07 game like its the defining moment of the UT Defense vs. Meyer. It's not. Just like the Defense handled Spurrier's offenses pretty well outside of 1995.

But they've lost the last four since the Zooker left and the spread emerged. That's what I meant by lately.
I'm not arguing that it's not a safe hire, but I don't want average. I want exceptional and I think Chavis only brings average to the table.

Losing the game is not always an indictment of the DC.
Does Ole Miss's victory over UF make their DC an expert vs. the spread?

Chavis' forte is LBs. He has a DB coach that will be available. Older guy, too. Larry Slade has been DBs coach with Chavis for 10 years.
