the problem comes when you give your friend a chance. will Miles be able to fire him if he's not a good fit and find the guy that is. or, would he be married to mallory win, lose, or draw?

That could be an issue but we'd just have to wait and see how things pan out.

The schemes have helped us stay in the top 3 in defense for 3 years now. The schemes seemed fine against Tennessee. Maybe Mallory would like to pressure more, who knows. We'll see.

Too big a gig for Mallory, as just when Miles was about to bring in his old OSU DC..

Football is king in college sports, LSU wins SEC and national crowns, and all it's great eras are via a dominant Defense, which in turn fuels one of the most profitable(and few in black ink) athletic departments in the country, one that turns over money to the University, it carries all other sports bankroll..

Thus DC(as much or more than arguably HC)..is a very, very, very important gig..one that requires maximum diligence in deciding..

Not a job to be given to a first-timer out of a believe in an in-house guy..based to loyalty.

Tenuta>>>>>>>>>>Mallory

But, Tenuta's name has supposedly come up for the SMU job. I agree, it is a very important decision. We'll see.

also if dewayne has been seriously talked to by LSU and it was a serious talk there's no way he'd take that UW job.

I don't think Miles would give it to Mallory(if that's what happens) if he didn't think Mallory was ready. Hiring from within isn't always the wrong thing.

It is if Coaches that are more qualified are available, IMO.

I guess I should say that hiring from within isn't always a failure.

Anyway, I agree but Miles may really feel that Mallory has what it takes, if that's what happens. Miles will not take this decision lightly.

Think Dinardo.

I know. And that's what I think has so many fans on here opposed to a coordinator hire from within solely on what happened with DiNardo and McConnell. Some can't get past that. Just because DiNardo made a bad hire from within doesn't mean Mallory would be a guaranteed/automatic failure. He might work out. If Mallory is hired, I'd be willing to to see how many people write him off immediately and not give him a chance.

But, do people think Mallory is a weak coach? Or is the problem the principle of hiring from within? I understand the principle somewhat....players get used to having a coach in a certain role and when he changes roles, you worry about how players respond.

We'll see.

We have no idea......hence the problem.

Well, the only way to find out is to let him do it. If it doesn't work out, we'll riot and protest and get him removed, if he's hired. Now, I wouldn't want to just any random coach the DC position to see if he could do it or not. But, I'd be more open to giving Mallory a shot, in this case, specifically.

If I were Miles, I would not take that gamble. If he hires a proven DC and it doesn't work out.....he made a good hire but it wasn't a good fit......if he hires someone like Mallory and it doesn't work out......there will be hell to pay.

Yeah, there would be. But, I'm not convinced Mallory would be a failure.

I honestly hope we never find out. If it happens and Mallory turns out to be a great DC, I'll be the first to eat crow.

it's not like Mallory is a prospect from central China..he's right there on the staff - Miles works with him every day and knows what he knows and sees how he works and interacts and prepares

if he is hired as DC, it won't be a gamble..it will be an informed decision to promote a capable coach who he has known and seen work first hand for many years

It's a gamble because he has not proven he can handle being a DC at ANY School.
