1. John Heacock- (from a 247 article in 2019)
How Iowa State became CFB's leader in defensive innovation
The link does a good job of explaining his style of defense more in detail.
I’m surprised his name doesn’t get brought up more. He does a great job against the Big 12 offenses while not having the talent as the other schools.

quote:

Iowa State’s system is somewhat hard to define, and that’s by design. Schematically, the Cyclones ran a 4-3 or a 4-2-5 when Heacock arrived with Campbell in 2016. Following a ho-hum non-conference stretch the next year, the Cyclones all but threw out their defensive playbook. Heacock’s directive was to get his best players on the field. The result: A 3-3-5 that put three defensive linemen, three linebackers and five defensive backs in the lineup.

quote:

“I think Coach Heacock is one of the great defensive coordinators in college football,” Baylor head coach Matt Rhule told 247Sports. “That defense is designed in a way where they’re taking away the big run play as well. The robber safety is always showing as an extra defender. People are having a hard time trying to find a way to run. I think if people could run the ball against them they’d have a lot of success.

If we’re going that route, let’s just clean house and hire Matt Campbell too.

That sounds promising but Heacock is 60 years old. I wouldn't be opposed to it but there seems to be a youth movement.

Going by the article at least he is adaptable and not stuck on what worked 20 years ago.

I agree with you. It is not an impediment to me. He may want to retire in 5 years, but we can't expect any DC to hang around longer than that.

His defense primarily is the 3-3-5.

So LSU will go from 3–4 to recruiting for 4-3 to changing the system to a 3-3-5?

He started at a 4-3. But due to the players he had an how offense is played he moved to 3-3-5 but he will run any defense.

I think the biggest problem is, other than for a big final payday, why would he leave where he is right before retirement? He’s got a stable job at a school he obviously enjoys working at. I’m not sure he leaves just for a raise.
