Insisting that a potential hire needs HC experience is a clown take

Riley had zero HC experience when he was promoted at OU

Kirby Smart had zero HC experience when he was hired at Georgia

Restricting yourself to only people who have had head coaching experience just limits your talent pool. That's not to say you don't consider it, but having it as a deal-breaker is dumb.

It depends on who’s available

Smart and Riley were well respected and everyone knew they wouldn’t last long as coordinators. There’s no one out there like that right now. Closest thing is Napier as a head coach of a lower tier school who could have an SEC job right now if he’d wanted it.

Agreed, but the field of coordinators is currently weak.

It is less of a clown take than insisting on credentials unrelated to coaching ability.

With the exception of Dabo, all those dudes were household names when they got hired. Who’s out there like that bow? Venables maybe?

Jim Leonhard, maybe Alex Grinch

Jeff Lebby is too tied to Kiffin, but also in that category.

Parker (Iowa DC) and Manning (Iowa State OC), also maybe in that category.

But, you're right, none of them were as well known as Jimbo or even Boom was (the Saban tree is lucrative for its branches, for sure).

Ok genius: who is the next Riley or Smart in college football who you would hire to take a top 10 job with 0 familiarity. That last bit is key. Both programs knew exactly who these guys were and what they were capable of. There was no mystery to either hire.

Other than Brady, which I think is extremely unlikely to happen for multiple reasons, who fits this mold? I don’t see any bonafide superstar college football coordinators who I would trust with this program today. Not even Venables.
