If you were Malzahn- championship or HC gig?

If you were in the position similar to Malzahn and you were given a HC gig with the stipulation that you need to start immediately, what would you do?
I believe all coaches have the desire to win it all but also know they want to be the big cheese. Would you be able to walk away from a championship to be Head coach.
Malzahn is a hot commodity right now and you want to strike while the iron is hot, but do you stay and go for it all and hope opportunities come at a later time?

NC and I wouldn't take a job like Vandy

i think he should bo pelini it and kinda do both. stay around and offensive coordinate, and take some small gaps of time to hit the recruiting trail. im personally interested to see how he does recruit...

If the 7 year, $3million a year is true...
I'd be a Commodore...for a first time head coaching gig, the money is there and the expectations are not....

He will OC the game. It would be dumb for Vandy not to let him do it. Having that on his resume is a big damn deal.

the expectations to win the SEC are not, but if you aspire to a better job than Vandy, its risky imo, if he goes 7-5 and makes a bowl, then he'd better jump then. but if he is going 5-7, will the big offers come?

It would be tough to wait until January 10th to get started though with national signing day in February. Does Chizik want this distraction?

I would think he could keep Vandy bowl eligible...which if done for any length of time would be impressive.
If he doesn't, he still gets $3million a year.
If the guy is confident in his offensive capabilities, he should be able to keep Vandy bowl eligible and play the role of spoiler in the east.

Recruiting isn't the issue. Assembling a staff to hit the ground running in January is the issue.
Recruiting Dead & Quite Periods:
* December 12: Quiet Period
* December 13-16: Dead Period
* December 17-18: Quiet Period
* December 19: Quiet Period
* December 20-January 3: Dead Period, though staff are allowed to have contact with recruits who have been admitted for mid-year enrollment.
* January 9: Quiet Period
* January 10-13: Dead Period, though staff are allowed to have contact with recruits who have been admitted for mid-year enrollment.

Economically smart thing to do is to go to Vandy. Get 3 years head coaching experience and have 15 MILIION in the bank.
If you go 5-6 or 6-5 it is basically seen as a great job. If you happen to knock off a top 10 SEC school one day, you could use that and he would quickly become the most sought after coaches WITH HEAD COACHING EXPERIENCE in teh SEC.
So get rich, get experience, and .500 records are considered great for the next 3 yrs!!!
NO BRAINER

depends on how you feel about waiting until after the national championship. He's the hot name now, will he wait until next year? Is there a coaching position in another major conference opening up where he would be a viable candidate?
(Stanford, who else?)
I mean if you think his stock will be this high next year without a heisman winning QB. Unless you guys think Barrett Trotter is going to light the world on fire....
By the time they play LSU next year they could easily have 5 losses (Mississippi State, Clemson, South Carolina, Arkansas, Florida)

Gene Chizik's 5–19 record at Iowa State, Nick Saban's 34–24–1 (the last year he was 9-2, before that he was consistently .500) record at MSU, Jim Grobe's 33-33-1 record at Ohio, Turner Gill's 20–30 record at Buffalo and Al Golden's 27–34 record at Temple suggest that he may get a big offer if he can have moderate success.

For $3mil a year I believe Vandy is making a statment...I would imagine 3-4 wins a year for more than a year or two might get a HC fired...even at Vandy...
In my opinion I think he owes to Auburn to coach in the championship game and vice versa...Auburn gave him a platform to display his ability and his offense helped put AU in the NC game...

how much does he make now? I think somewhere between 6 times and 3 times his salary today?
Posted on 12/13/10 at 11:48 am to ironsides
Right now I think he makes around $500,000 a year...

I see getting 6-7 wins a year with this schedule. Maybe more if he could pull off an upset or 2 against UGA, Tenn, or USCe. He can't be any worse than Ole Miss was this year.
2011 schedule for Vanderbilt:
Elon - W
Connecticut - W
Ole Miss - W
at South Carolina - L
at Alabama - L
Georgia - L
Army - W
Arkansas - L
at Florida - L
Kentucky - W
at Tennessee - L
at Wake Forest - W

so basically he's going to make 6 times what he makes now, and risk potentially not getting a head coaching position at a major conference?

Trust me, if he takes the job at Vandy he will be allowed to OC the NC game if he wants to and Auburn wants him to.

How can you say that for sure? It'd probably be smart for Vandy to let him do that. Tom Osborne encouraged Bo Pelini to coach in the NC game, since it's a great recruiting tool. However Arizona didn't allow Mike Stoops to coach in the 2003 NC game. But yeah, Malzahn would need to hit the ground running and start hiring coaches at Vandy. I'm sure Osborne was able to take care of business in Nebraska without Bo's presence, but I'm not sure about Vandy's AD.
