If Jon Tenuta was the greatest DC candidate out there.......

....why isn't he a DC at a decent university right now?

Because he decided to go be the Assistant Head Coach and LB coach at one of the great programs in the history of college football and coach along side some other great coaches and add something to his resume and try to help ND become relevent again in College football. "Assistant Head Coach" is another resume builder in the world of coaching. He will be a DC at a major school again soon whether it's ND or not.

I didn't realize coaching a shitty ND team was a resume building step. Seriously, what other "great coaches" are at ND?

Excellent observation.
Because he has a rather notable down side, which is all too well known within the CFB coaching fraternity.
Apparently, some fans seem to believe merely acting out on the sidelines, being the nebulous "aggressive" and going apesh*t on defensive players on the sidelines to appease said fans, coupled with blitzing on every play makes for a stellar DC.
So "stellar" in fact that with all Tenuta's DC capabilities - and he can be quite good at times - not a single college program raced out to snag him at season's end last year ... leaving Tenuta to come on board at ND at the proverbial "11th hour" after it became apparent no other job invites were coming, as assistant to Weiss coaching a position on ND's D which isn't even where Tenuta's coaching skills are best utilized.

Do you actually believe this bullshite? He's at Notre Dame cause nobody else would fricking hire his arse. Why that is, I don't know, but apparently there's a reason. And it ain't cause he wanted to go save Notre Dame.

Not really. It's usually used as an excuse to give more money and an attempt to retain a valued assistant that you don't want to use.
At LSU Porter is Assistant Head Coach and running backs coach. He is a valued recruiter, but not coordinator material.

I think his plan was to be at Michigan this season, but once that fell through, he decided to get what he could and ND happend to be available.

Dude, there were lots of DC positions available between that Michigan thing and him taking the Notre Dame job. The fact is, for whatever reason, nobody wanted him.

I would imagine that timing could have played a factor in him not getting a job...besides, he could have been being selective in what schools he went to.

Texas was DC shopping, too. UCLA out west. Bo Pelini at Nebraska. And like Chicken, I'm not sure if Rich Rod brought his DC from West Virginia. Texas, Nebraska, UCLA, and Michigan. Those are all pretty good jobs.
