as long as Aranda is kept and would love to keep raymond as well.I'm assuming O would take a job elsewhere. So i would be ok with a chad morris, Western Michigan coach, fedora if we cant get Herman, fisher or the big fish. Is gundy at ok. state considerd a big fish? his offense with aranda defense would be nice . I only bring him up because i think he would leave ok state just for the chance to win a national title.

You assume Aranda A) will not have other opportunities this off season (he will), B) that if he does have opportunities he would rather stay put at LSU (he might), and C) that the next coach is going to abdicate his authority over staff decisions and fall in line with an AD forcing someone on him (Aranda would make a GREAT DC for whoever is next HC, but you understand that most HCs want to hire who THEY want).

I'm sure the next HC would much more appreciate a comment like "Aranda has proven to be one of the best DCs in the country, he's immersed himself in LSU, and he's a great recruiter. we'd like for you to have him among those you strongly consider for DC". That will go over much better than "you have to keep this guy as your DC".

I don't think his point was how it is approached. I think he meant that he would be open to taking a riskier hire as long as that coach wants Aranda in the picture (and we are assuming Aranda stays one more year in this scenario).

people say this like its a fact but the trends in hiring dont back it up. the majority of new coaches this year were either HCs somewhere else or came from offense, thats the sexier hire from a PR standpoint.

for G5 schols, their were 13 new coaches hired, only 1 came from defense

G5 schools

Ball State
Mike Neu - QBC from the Saints
$425,000

Bowling Green
Mike Jinks - RBC from Texas Tech
$410,000

East Carolina
Scottie Montgomery - OC from Duke
$1M

Georgia Southern
Tyson Summers - DC from Colorado State
$500,000

Hawaii
Nick Rolovich - OC from Hawaii
$400,000

Louisiana-Monroe
Matt Viator - HC from McNese
$390,000

Memphis
Mike Norvell - OC from Arizona State
$1.8M

North Texas
Seth Littrell - OC from UNC
$815,000

Southern Miss
Jay Hopson - HC from Alcorn State
$500,000

Toledo
Jason Candle - OC from Toledo
$675,000

Tulane
Willie Fritz - HC from Georgia Southern
N/A

UCF
Scott Frost - OC from Oregon
$1.7M

UTSA
Frank Wilson - RBC from LSU
$835,000

Aranda made 1.3M here and by all accounts will be getting a raise and hopefully extension this year.

there were more defensive coaches for the P5, out of 14 hires, 7 were from defense, but only Durkin and Ash were true outsiders, and theyre both known as monster recruiters.

P5 schools

BYU
Kalani Sitake - DC from Oregon State (former player, guy they settled on because everyone else passed)
N/A

Georgia
Kirby Smart - DC from bama (former player, had been in the SEC for 10 years)
$3.75M

Illinois
Lovie Smith - HC from the Bucs
$1.8M

Iowa State
Matt Campbell - HC from Toledo
$2M

Maryland
D. J. Durkin - DC/LB from Michigan
$2.4M

Miami
Mark Richt - HC from UGA
N/A

Minnesota
Tracy Claeys - DC/AHC from Minnesota (promoted from within)
$1.4M

Missouri
Barry Odom - DC from Missouri (promoted from within)
$2.35M

Rutgers
Chris Ash - co-DC from Ohio State
$2M

South Carolina
Will Muschamp - DC from Auburn (ex Florida HC)
$3M

Syracuse
Dino Babers - HC from Bowling Greene
N/A

USC
Clay Helton - OC from USC
N/A

Virginia
Bronco Mendenhall - HC from BYU
$3.2M

Virginia Tech
Fuente - HC from Memphis
$3.2M

im the biggest Aranda fan that there is but im optimistic that it might take a while for the right job to find him. look at a guy like Venables at Clemson, guys been a tier 1 DC for a very long time, and a good recruiter, yet he's still there.

He's not going anywhere to be a DC. It'll be for a head coaching gig. And if he has one more successful year here, his opportunities will sky rocket.
