I believe Auburn already had its new coach lined up before Gus was fired

I know Gus wasn't the most popular coach among Auburn fans, but no big-time football program, especially this year when programs have lost millions, is going to fire its coach and payout 21.4 million without a sure thing already in place.

You don't just fire your coach a day after his team just beat an SEC opponent on the road, has a winning record for the season and has proven he can beat Saban regularly. It's also been reported that the firing will cost Auburn close to $40 million when you include all the assistant coaches payout.

I have no clue who Auburn is going to hire, but I can guarantee it's going to be a huge name and it's going to cost them a lot of guaranteed money. Auburn didn't send Gus packing with a loaded bank account to risk its future on an young, unproven head coach for Saban to feast on.

They must have. This is huuuuuge business. It would be irresponsible (understatement) to fire a coach with 21M buyout and have nothing secured

That's the only thing that makes sense. They have a fairly new AD and I'm sure he wants to make a big splash with his first football HC hire, especially after paying out 21.4 million for Gus to walk!

Or it’s a 2 step process.

Saban will beat Auburn again because Nick have his team all set just about every year to beat Auburn. But when there is a newly hired HC for any team it will take time to get the new HC to get his system in order and get players to know the new system and the coaching staffs to gel and make it work. It is true to just about all programs. Just a few that is all set for the following year with a new HC.

I makes sense that Auburn already has their new guy all locked up. No announcement could mean he still has games to coach with his current team. It's not unusual for a coach to jump before a bowl game, but not if there are regular games yet to be played. I just don't see Auburn turning the program over the Steele.

It's not going to be Steele. I've talked to a lot of Auburn fans over here in Mobile and his name is not even being mentioned. I sense they really want Freeze, but are afraid that he might burn them like he did Ole Miss. I'm hearing a lot of talk about Cristobal and some about Sarkisian also. Cristobal they like because he coached under Saban and is a great recruiter. He's also been a head coach at a couple of places and done fairly well. Sark also have a sketchy background during his time at USC and that concerns them. Truthfully, I think they have their guy and will announce it as soon as the season wraps up!

If Auburn hired Bruce Pearl they aren't afraid of hiring Freeze.

Well obviously not many common fans want Kevin Steele - but it doesn’t really matter what they want.

If the people making the decisions want Steele, then he will be the coach.

Yep, no way during the covid, and huge losses of $$$ to departments, that you pay 21mil for a guy to not coach your team+ new coaches salary, unless YOU have your man.
