How many former Saban/Belichick assistants have to flame out before people wake up

It’s such a dumb/lazy idea that a coach having been in one of these rehab programs suddenly become better by osmosis of just having been around these guys

The Mike Locksley hire is still hilarious

i mean isn't pretty lazy to assume the process of improving is via "osmosis" as opposed to you know, learning things?
Also Jimbo won a NC, Kirby played for one (losing of course to Saban) and is #1 as we speak. Mark Dantonio did very well at Mich State. Cristobal, Tucker and Napier are all doing well thus far and Kiffin is clearly on the rise, so what's lazy, dismissing a coach because he worked for Saban or looking at them individually?

I mean...D'Antonio, Smart, Jimbo, and Kiffin were all pretty great coaches, to varying degrees.

Completely agree.
Of all the coaches who’ve worked “under Nick Saban” a whopping total of two (2) are doing great at the moment.
The idea that the odds are any better with a hire if they worked for Saban at one time is stupid.

We need to reevaluate the “Saban tree” if Kiffin is included on it. Same for Jimbo, he coached under Les, Tommy and Bobby Bowden as much as Saban.

How many people have to misspell Belichick before people wake up? It’s such a dumb/lazy thing.

There are 5 former Saban assistants in the current top 15 including #1. 6 in the top 25

this assumption is what is lazy.

Many believed and argued that being with Saban made Kiffin a better head coach, as of now there is absolutely no evidence of that.

Did I say dismiss anybody because they worked for Saban?

You know, I remember when Les Miles was being hired and the news was not yet official....someone did an on-field interview w/ William Jenkins (then President) and he said, "once the analyses are done, I think people will be (very happy with the hire)."
The basis for that was a coach at a smaller school than the big dog in a given state performing pretty well, especially against said big dog.
Granted, Les Miles had some great seasons here. He won a National Championship. He also overstayed his own ego.
The bottom line is this....you simply cannot pigeon-hole a hire into which background he came from just because it matched that of someone else.
By the same token, you cannot assume that just because someone coached under someone else that they will ultimately be successful.
McElwain sucked donkey balls.
Muschamp sucked donkey balls.
Kirby Smart is killing it.
Jimbo Fisher hasn't done too shabby.
It's such a risky business and the AD's that don't know crap hire based on single game outcomes, coaching mentorship, and situational scenarios alone.
All of those things have merit, but not as prominent factors alongside nothing else.
I don't envy AD's.

Add Derek Dooley to the list of “saban tree” flameouts

I mean he took over a 3-9 FAU team and won 11 games twice in 3 years, in year 2 he has OM in the top 10 heading into the Egg Bowl, his best season before was 10-2 at USC, what evidence are you looking for?

then what exactly is your point? No one is arguing someone should be hired just because they worked for Saban, just as part of the argument.

He was a good coach before and he’s a good coach now. That he went 10-2 while USC was under major sanctions is not evidence that he is less of a coach then than he is now.
His strengths and flaws are basically the same and any improvement can just as easily be chalked up to him being 46 and not 33 as it can the time he spent in Tuscaloosa teaching Saban how to properly value offensive football in the 21st century.

just as part of the argument.
And I’m saying any benefit of a coach having been under Saban or Belichick is negligible in most if not all cases and should not be part of the argument as to why a certain coach should be hired.
I don’t believe Kirby Smart would be an appreciably worse coach at Georgia if he had been DC under Les for all those years instead of Saban.
