Hopefully we can add Billy Kennedy to the fired coaches roster soon

That was not only pathetic, but was par for the course of his tenure.
Top that off with the best player he recruited (whose dad is one of the assistant coaches) being kicked off the team.

Awful hire in the first place. He coached in a one-bid league. You don't make that jump. Big conference schools hire from multiple bid mid-major leagues at the minimum.

Let's go for Pearl. We have nothing to lose. It literally couldn't be worse.

MELVIN WATKINS would be an upgrade at this point and that's saying something.

When in the hell will fans(of all teams not just the faggies) realize it is REALLY hard to hire away from other major conferences. Id say Kentucky, Duke, UNC, Kansas, Indiana and UCLA are about the only basketball programs that can consistently hire away major coaches. Itll happen every once in a while but not often.

So its good that Pearl and howland arent coaching right now

Well theres 2 of the probably 20+ teams coaching vacancies filled at programs similar to A&M. Yall better fire soon

Hey smartass..
You know there is a distinct possibility that our next coach hasn't even been fired yet.
Let's not get in too big of a rush.

I dont think you want a coach that got fired from another mediocre program.

I'm not saying major conferences. But why hire a coach who has to win the damn conference tournament just to make the tourney. It is a totally different league. You don't recognize 90% of the schools on Murray State's schedule.

I mean theres those leauges and major conferences and that's about it. Theres not really in between I can think of honestly where its 2 or 3 small teams a year. I think its really hard to hire a good basketball coach compared to football is the problem. Pearl was at Wisconsin-Milwaukee before UT. A lot of small school coached strike out but sometimes you strike gold. Then Kentucky, UCLA or somebody hires them away.

Much more competitive league. That was a Horizon League with Butler, Cleveland State, and Valparaiso.

From 2001-2005(Pearls tenure) the only team of those you listed that made the tournament was Butler, once in 2001.
While Kennedy was at Murray State, Morehead State at least one tournament game if I remember. There really is no difference in those leagues.

As a rule of thumb, if you're a member of a Big 6 conference (Big 7 now that the Big East is basketball only), you need to hire a coach that has made the NCAA tournament as an at-large school, not one from a league that requires you to win your conference tournament.
Tony Barone (Creighton - Missouri Valley [now Big East]): Right idea, but didn't
succeed (at-large in 1991 with Creighton)
Melvin Watkins (UNC-Charlotte - CUSA): Right idea, but EPIC FAIL (at large in 1996 and 1997)
Billy Gillispie (UTEP - WAC): Right idea, BIG SUCCESS (at-large in 2004)
Mark Turgeon (Wichita State - Missouri Valley): Right idea, decent success (at large + Sweet 16 in 2006)
Billy Kennedy (Murray State - Ohio Valley): ABSOLUTELY THE WRONG IDEA, EPIC FAIL

CUSA was not a bad basketball conference at all then. They had Louisville, Miami, BC, and a couple others who were competitive. I think hiring a basketball coach is very hard to do, as the talent a conference has changes a lot over time unlike football. I think that the coaches who are these mid-major coaches who win their conference tournaments aren't the greatest but they aren't a bad place to start. At the end of the season count how many of the Big 7 conference have coaches fired on teams that aren't a special program and at least 60% will hire mid-major coaches. That's just how it is.
