Reed has been inconsistent. Oftentimes, a checkdown is wide open. Just take the 7 yds. He has pushed it downfield in coverage instead.
South Carolina 1st half is a perfect example. Then he turns it on in the 2nd half. 31 unanswered points.
He can do it. Just needs to do it routinely.

I believe I read y’all are replacing almost all of your OL going into next year. Take it from an LSU fan that just did this when I say, good luck. Expect Reed to take a step back next year for no other reason than this. Thats not even accounting for skill position losses around him.

23 years of coaching without ever calling plays or being even some type of co-coordinator or passing coordinator seems risky for a defensive coach who had been calling the defense by some accounts. If this guy was any good at calling plays or running the offense he would have had a job as the OC somewhere before this.
Now pushing 2 hires from within the staff to coordinators seems like something Les would do after signing a big extension. One with no offensive coordinating experience and the new DC saw James Madison improve on defensive yards per game a lot this season after he left. I am also not sure what happen with him leaving wake forest as the defensive coordinator and then going to Duke to coach safeties which seems like a demotion.
Reed is already inconsistent and throws some inaccurate passes and picks. 25 TDs to 10 interceptions while throwing for under 3,000 yards
I see Reed regressing next season without an experienced coordinator. He still needs to improve, and He can’t overcome a coordinator in training.
Miami has a better pass defense than Texas which was Reed’s worst passing rating game of the season. Losing OC as a full time coach is going to be a hindrance to addressing what Texas did to the offense for Miami game. Just promoting the WR coach with no experience calling plays instead of bringing in experience isn’t helping to make up for Klein’s head being at Kansas State for A&M’s prep for the Miami game.

Not all 5 positions. But most. We shall see.

Klein is calling the plays through the playoffs. Not sure about Bateman but he wasn't calling the defense anyway.

Local College Station news said this guy is the reason Craver and Conception are on the team. So sounds like a good recruiter.

A good OC a good recruiter does not necessarily make.
Elko said they interviewed 5 external candidates and went with Wiggins. So who knows if that's true or to what extent they "interviewed".
Hiring Williams as an LB coach I don't see as an issue unless they go the co-dc route which I hate.

He will retain playcalling duties (for better or worse) through the playoffs.
Are you saying its a bad thing that he is retaining play calling duties?

Could be, maybe not. I personally don't see how one can negotiate dividing equal time between game preparation, and season preparation as a new head coach.

Kirby smart did it. Before that Bo Pelini did it. It’s been done.

Going from hiring a former college starting QB at Kansas State, one time finalist for Heisman, and at 34 had the below experience in just 10 years of coaching at that point of being hired at A&M.
2014–2015 Kansas State (DQC/GA)
2016 Northern Iowa (QB)
2017 Kansas State (QB)
2018 Kansas State (co-OC/QB)
2019–2021 Kansas State (QB)
2022–2023 Kansas State (OC/QB)
To hiring a former unknown RB at New Mexico and at 45 has never coordinated or called plays before in 23 years of coaching.
2003–2004 New Mexico (SA)
2005 New Mexico (GA)
2006–2010 Illinois State (RB)
2011 Tulsa (RB)
2012–2015 Memphis (WR)
2016–2018 Virginia Tech (WR)
2019–2020 Alabama (WR)
2021–2023 Alabama (AHC/WR)
2024–2025 Texas A&M (WR)
Even before this season Elko impressed me including with his staff hires, but going from his first OC hire who had a lot of experience coaching QBs and 3 years calling plays to hiring a recruiter WR coach with zero experience calling plays or coordinating anything is one of the least impressive hires I have seen.
If Elko needs a frank wilson type to recruit or keep key players than hire this guy, but as the head coach you better be the one actually calling the offensive plays and coordinating the offense which is not Elko.
Reed is going to becoming an interception machine next year. Elko is over estimating where Reed is in his development as QB if he thinks he can take such a huge risk on his OC hire for next season.

I’m surprised Elko made these coordinator hires. Always a gamble but obviously he trust those guys. He’s made some good hires initially and figured he’d look around again and given the momentum of their program I really didn’t see him going the route of promoting from within. Seems like they could have gotten a bright young coordinator from elsewhere who has actually called plays and had success.
If Elko wins at a nice clip the next couple of years then he will have the benefit of the doubt but it’s hard to put too much into this year given their schedule and Klein was really really good. Will be interesting to see how this works out.
