Fun fact:

I grew up in Marrero, La. on Ames Bvld. Marrero was named after Louis Marrero, a politician/landowner who helped develop much of the Westbank. Before it was named Marrero, the town was called Amesville, because the land had been purchased by influential Boston politician Oakes Ames, of whom Ames,IA is also named after.

A buddy of mine is an Iowa State grad. He is constantly concerned that a big time program will hire Matt Campbell away from the Cyclones. He has posted a solid record at ISU despite settling for mostly 3 star recruits.

Clearly, Iowa State is a tougher sale for recruits than LSU would be.

LSU could certainly do much worse than Campbell with this hire.

James Franklin did the same thing at Vanderbilt that Matt Campbell has done at Iowa State. Anybody clamoring to hire James Franklin now?

As far as Ames, Iowa, I've been to South Bend, Indiana. It's Ames, Iowa minus the corn, with worse weather.

His coaching career is bowling green, Toledo, and Iowa St. He hasn’t been a coach at anywhere relevant. How does he handle the pressure. Do you want a guy like that as your head football coach? I wouldn’t.

Yes. Lived in Ames for over 20 years. What your description left out is the type of town it is to raise a family in, be a D1 coach in, and to actually live in - not visit.

It is a quintessential Midwest family town. I really do not think there are many places better to raise a family if you’re looking for more Mayberry than Watts. There are many years when the murder rate in Ames per 1,000 is 0.00%. Kids who have “famous” parents aren’t treated any different than another kid. They are not “Matt Campbell’s kid” they are Ricky, Bella, Elaine, and Kate.

For a guy like Campbell that is huge.

If you’re knocking Ames because it’s hard to recruit to you are correct in some ways it’s damn hard. However there have been a lot of draft picks in BB and FB who came to ISU because it isn’t hoodville and they wanted out.

If your knocking Ames because it will make getting Campbell easier your wrong he’s a huuuge family first guy and Ames is a huuuge family first town.

quote:

You're always going to get 15 4-star recruits in a class at LSU, and a couple of 5-stars to go with them.

What Campbell's skill set could give you is a lot more Lloyd Cushenberrys and less Kardell Thomases.

Because in case you haven't noticed a lot of our success has come from guessing right on lesser-recruited kids. Even Orgeron found Neil Farrell when Marvin Wilson didn't want to come, and there's no doubt who's had a better career.

Keep telling yourself this because Campbell is the flavor of the moment. Campbell is Dan Mullen! a coach who did well and overachieved at a lower expectation school, but as with Mullen he is not a great recruiter nor has he shown a zeal for it.
Mullen wasn't a great recruiter at and that has carried over at Florida. The same excuse that its hard to recruit to Starkville, but he'll do better at Florida was the narrative being thrown out then too. Funny how history is repeating the same argument in support of Campbell!

Ask the Florida fans if they are happy with Mullen. Some guys are more suited to lower tier programs.

Miss State and Iowa State and similar programs. Starkville and Ames are similar places.

Mullen and Campbell are two sides of the same coin. Florida has buyers remorse right now. If we hire Campbell in 3 years we'll be feeling the same.
