This offseason's candidate crop

* The "Big Names": Bill Cowher, Jon Gruden, John Fox, Tony Dungy, Herm Edwards, Marty Schottenheimer and Brian Billick
* The rising stars: Rob Ryan, Brian Schottenheimer, Perry Fewell, Mike Zimmer and Hue Jackson
* Second-chance head coaches: Mike Mularkey, Mike Nolan, Gregg Williams, Kevin Gilbride and Marty Mornhinweg [Editor's note: ESPN the Magazine's Seth Wickersham concluded that Morninhweg could be the next great NFL coach in an article this past January]
* NCAA names to keep in mind: LSU's Les Miles, Stanford's Jim Harbaugh, Alabama's Nick Saban, UNC's Butch Davis, Iowa's Kirk Ferentz and Oklahoma's Bob Stoops

Hoping he plays out like his brother.

Mike Nolan

Maybe, I'm mixing up the names, but didn't he already coach there.

Are the only real possibilities to leave their current position IMO.

Mike Nolan on the list is comical.... since he was fired from there just 2 years ago.

Harbaugh is such an obvious choice right in their backyard.

Butch Davis isn't going back to the NFL.

And let's not forget what happened the last time the 49ers hired a coach from Stanford.

I don't think so either. The only reason I put him as a possible is because he might want to run far away from the shite storm brewing at UNC.

This list is garbage. ESPN is just throwing random names out there.

Really? Dude was 5-27 when he coached in Detroit.

Im not sure Miles would be too bad in the NFL, especially with top notch OC and DC.
