He did nothing wrong. He was told a story from a good source and he leaked it because ESPN told him to. He will not get fired and probably wont even be put on probation.

He may have had a good source and what he reported may have been true at the time, but what he didn't do is check with Bill Martin and the Michigan SID and Skip or Les and the LSU SID.

That's where he fricked up. He didn't double check his sources. I'm not mad. In fact, I'm glad he did because I think may have helped botch the process of Les going to UM.

The whole problem with this story is that it was a dynamic(evolving) story as it was playing out. Who knows what was really going on. The only thing I know is that Herby was a pawn and played the part to perfection. Puppet on a string. Funny how UM pulled his strings.....
I personally believe Lloyd Carr was behind it. LM saw the writing on the wall. Les just figured having LC constantly trying to undermine him at UM just wasn't worth it.

I think Kirk is a good guy. I think he made a mistake and probably won't make one like it again. I imagine that Les was furious when he heard it considering his team was about to play a conference title game and he supposedly couldn't even get in contact with Bill Martin.

And you may be right about Carr.

Maybe Lloyd was the one who impersonated Desmond. Can you imagine.

There definitely seems to be bad blood between Miles and Carr. Was Les really spilling the beans to recruits regarding Lloyd's upcoming retirement? Was Les telling recruits Lloyd had Parkinsons? I don't know. But something happened between the two. However, if it was true, and then Les did come to Michigan, that would have been pretty low. You can't tell a kid not to go to Michigan because the coach is retiring, and then bolt for Michigan when it happens...leaving the kid at LSU. He should have told the kids to go to Michigan because I am planning on being there in two years.

Just having fun guys. Les seems to be a stand-up and honest guy.

From what I understand, their problems started when they were both assistant coaches at UM.

that's what I've always heard but supposedly some other assit. coachs from that time period say all was good between the two, so whatever their issue is came after LM left, which could be the reason itself, I think LC was mad LM didn't stick around on his staff cause I'm sure lloyd new he would loose his mind after a few years and LM would help him look smart....

Les may have left because Lloyd got promoted and maybe Lloyd told him he needed to find a new job.

I've heard that Miles and Cameron were the two "pistols" on the staff who would mouth off from time to time.

Maybe. But Lloyd did make reference to "things happening" on the recruiting trail. He said this at his retirement press conference. He also said "let's let bygones be bygones." So, Lloyd may just have been trying to put to rest the speculation. Saying, 'yes, things happened, but they are in the past, so let's move on.'

I don't doubt things may have happened on the recruiting trail......especially with Jai Eugene and possibly Joe Barksdale.

As far as what he said about the past, that was probably just smart public relations. You never heard him or read anything about him endorsing Les Miles for the job.

UM could have easily had Les Miles, if Lloyd Carr and others wanted him.

You're right. I never heard Carr publically endorse Miles either. And since there was so much speculation about their relationship, a public response by Carr would have been more than appropriate...IF Carr wanted Miles to come Ann Arbor. So, Carr's silence spoke volumes!!

Herbstreit is NOT a fact checker, that is someone elses job. Herbie said he talked to Tenuta who admits to being "swept up" in all of it and he confirmed.

Trust me...I believe 100% Tenuta did not say it was a done deal to Michigan...

First of all why would he...Second if it was a done deal that he was going with Miles like they reported his deal would already be done with LSU...The source was not Tenuta...That is for sure.

Saying "let's let bygones be bygones" is a good way of publicly acknowledging that there are bygones...

As I've said many times before, Les accepted Herbtreit's source, the fans should too.

People calling for Herbie's head should recall that Herbie has actually been pretty friendly to LSU this year. He's really talked us up. Yeah, I pretty much want the scalp of ESPN in general, but Herbie's really been good to us.

The only problem I have with this whole Herbie thing was the timing. I think the timing of the leak was intended to F with Miles. I think the timing of the reporting was intended to F with LSU's game by ESPN. I don't think it was directed at LSU to specifically target LSU it was just a hot juicey story that would could F up the teams game. ESPN would do that to any team except maybe USC and/or ND. Herbie wouldn't do it to OSU but someone else would have. The fact is the Media has been trying to undermine LSU/Miles all season long with this UM Bull. Herbie thought he had the homerun at the end of the game and took his best swing. Only problem, he struck out!
This whole thing is an indictment to ESPN and sports reporting in general.

sabbertooth, I'm with you. When Les came on the tube with his rebuttal I damn near gave the wife and the dog a heart attack with the warhoop I let out. For the first time during that drama I felt relieved. Told the old lady that Les wasn't going anywhere.
