or
How much would this particular factor play in a coach's decision to take a certain job?

Is this even debatable? No, it's not.

B1G is the appropriate answer.

only comparing SEC vs Big 12 here.
Posted on 12/11/13 at 10:49 am to LaBR4
what are the numbers as far as appearances?... the SEC has had now 9 appearances in 8 years, i believe... the Big12 has had 3 since 2005 (OU once and UT twice).

With the playoff system, it will be much harder for the SEC to get in year after year.

Uh....NO. It will actually be easier.

Texas got in twice with Mack fricking Brown.
Saban would dominate.

I've always been a believer that good legitimate competition, week end and week out, goes a long way toward making teams great.
If anything, it sure seems recent history proves this correct.

I think this is correct... with the BCS, SEC teams have gotten the benefit of the doubt more times than not, especially lately (Bama 2011 over Ok State being the most obvious example).
But that system is gone now... it's 12 people in a room making four decisions... all with their built in bias.

With the playoff coming, Alabama would be able to drop a game each year and be part of the 4. I am not sure Texas would be afforded that luxury.

Good point, I hadn't thought of that.

This seems correct too. The only way to make sure you land at #1 or #2 is to run the table, easier in the Big 12 against OU, Kansas, Iowa State, Baylor, etc.

Honest opinion, if you're talking about the new format that starts next year? Big 12.
You're trying to get 1 of 4 spots, as selected by a group of powerful people from around the entire college world. Those people from outside the SEC (which would be the majority, make no mistake) will not think highly of the SEC, or really any one conference, getting 2 of those slots. If you allow it once, you allow for a precedent, and that means even if your team makes it this year at the expense of another conference (say, 2 SEC, 1 Big, 1 Pac 12, Big 12 left out), you risk your spot in future years.
This is meant to level out the college game, and it will. The SEC might make it every year, and win the first several, but that will change. Recruits will see that Alabama/Auburn/LSU/Fla might each get in once, but Ohio St and Florida St have gone 3 or 4 times... and then choose to play at the team with the better odds of making it.
The Big 12, despite all the high octane glamour offenses, really only has Texas and Oklahoma as potentially dominant programs. You land at one of those jobs, and you have a clearer pathway than in the SEC.

One may be the easier way to get there, but the other is the easier way to win when you get there...

Actually the SEC has a far easier path and its not close.
If you had a Playoff this year you would have 2 SEC schools and no Big 12 Schools. Last year it would have also been the same because both years you had an SEC team as the clear #3.
The Big 12 hasn't had a team in the NC since 2009 and is significantly weaker now. It is also at a huge disadvantage as the 5th best conference trying to get into a 4 team playoff that has no Conference Championship requirement. A loss of any kind makes it very difficult for a Big 12 team to get in at all.
Don't forget as well, getting in the playoff is just half the battle. Who do you think is better prepared to win? An SEC team that likely has played 3 or more Top 10 teams and has to win 2 games or a Big 12 team that may not have played any or maybe 1? Iron sharpens iron, just look at Auburn this year. Winning those tough games gives a team a huge boost and confidence to win even bigger games. Assume Baylor hadn't gotten blown out by OSU, do you really think they could beat Florida State and then the winner of the Bama/Auburn rematch? Lol, no. How about if Ohio State had beaten Michigan State? I'd give it about a 2% chance.
I would be surprised if the SEC doesn't win at least 5 of the next 10 NC's. So using that logic if you are at another school you are battling against everyone else for the other 5. The system is really more SEC friendly than the BCS believe it or not.

quote:Not going to happen in the committee room. You're going to have people protecting all the major conferences, and they will have to agree, for the most part, on 4 teams.

My guess at how what you suggest would play out:
SEC: we think Alabama should be in, in addition to our champ, Auburn. They're clearly better than the Big 12 champ.
Big 12: Oh yeah? frick you. How about this- I say Ohio St over Auburn. Same record, they didn't lose to a 3 loss team, didn't need miracles the past month to even get there. How you like that?
B1G: Good point about Ohio St. Better record on the field the past 2 years than Alabama OR Auburn. I second that motion. What you think, Pac 12?
Pac 12: yup. interesting.
SEC (stares at B1G, shakes head): but the polls-
Big 12: frick the polls. I have polls saying 80% of the country is tired of you guys. Nobody cares about what you want.
ACC: OK guys, chill. We got #1 this year with Fla St, I think we can all agree to that. Yes? SEC, you guys get your team in. If you want that to be Alabama over Auburn, that's your call. Now, let's look at the other two spots....
something along those lines.
I just don't see it playing out any other way. And for the record, I do think the SEC is the best conference, and Alabama is definitely one of the 4 best teams. They just didn't win, and that is what will count now

Well, Slive was VERY specific that he wouldn't sign off until it was agreed that it was the best 4 teams and NOT the Conference Champs. The biggest thing the Committee is going to want is credibility and to NOT show bias. If they didn't take Bama this year, or Florida last year, or Bama the year before that they would have an awfully hard time making that case.
If the SEC were to cry foul they are powerful enough to blow the whole thing up. Either it would go to 8 teams or it would go away. It's just ridiculous to think they would just throw out the polls and be blatantly biased. Now if you had a #4 SEC team that was neck and neck with a Conference Champ at #5 the SEC school might get left out but I don't have a big issue with that.
Another huge plus is the SEC is virtually guaranteed a spot in the playoff for their champion whereas none of the other conferences can say the same. The only way it wouldn't happen is if you had a 3 loss team win the SEC Championship game as a big underdog or something of the like.

and, just to add... this is for a coach to make it in. As noted, the Big 12 is weaker; so that means a good coach at a top Big 12 team (let's say it- Saban at Texas) has a better shot of getting there, than a good coach at a top SEC team. Miles is a good coach at LSU (just look at his record), and he has to contend with Bama, Auburn, Florida, and whoever else rises each year, and then the conference championship (which is in the East territory). If he can guide LSU through that gauntlet, then sure, his team will be favored to win it all. But he's only made it twice in 9 yrs.
You have to get there to win it.

quote:Not really; let's say Florida St blows the doors off Auburn. That's a very real possibility- I actually believe Auburn is probably getting 7 pts just for "being SEC", and they're still about a 10 pt underdog. Fla St rolls, and our magical string of titles is broken. And suddenly, the field levels out again.
Another huge plus is the SEC is virtually guaranteed a spot in the playoff for their champion whereas none of the other conferences can say the same
SEC dominance is a mirage; we've had some dominant teams in Alabama, LSU and Florida. That can, and has, happened elsewhere. If Fla St stays like they are, you have to call the ACC a lock. If USC rises back to where they were (which is above Oregon and Stanford) the Pac 12 is a lock. That's ignoring the obvious Ohio St and Oklahoma runs of the past decade; suddenly you're getting a lot of "locks" for 4 spots.
quote:8 would be best; but I gotta figure the bowl system won't work with that, and there's no way the big programs will allow the bowls to go away. The bowl game itself is irrelevant; it's getting an extra month to practice each year. You lose that for all but just a few, and you kill a lot of contenders longterm.
Either it would go to 8 teams or it would go away
