Does ND’s reluctance to join a conference play any role in Kelly’s departure?

Maybe not so much now, but with the future eventually leading to an 8-team playoff system and conference champions (plus 2 SEC) almost guaranteed to get in.

Seems like he’d want to be settled in a conference where he can actually compete for a playoff spot every season.

Absolutely. He knows there is a ceiling there.

If expansion happens there are literally rules built in to prohibit ND from having a bye.

Well, last year they played in the ACC and won the thing, then went to the playoffs. If I remember right everybody figured that would be a prelude to sticking around permanently. But it didn't happen. So sure, that might have helped us pull Kelly.
