does malzahn even want to be a head coach?

you know, not every coordinator wants to be nor would necessarily make a good head coach. Making half a mil a year ain't bad doing something you really love to do.
you've heard of the peter principle? people rise to the level of their incompetence. why does every successful coordinator have to be a head coach? there have been a few guys that were great that never made the move.
Now if you want a guaranteed 20million for 5-7 years and you'll be happy to go fishing and hunting if things don't work out, i guess you could give it a go.
anyway, i've never heard whether he has expressed an interest in head coaching.

He has stated that is his ultimate goal...but he wants to make sure it is the right fit...he is not going to take just any job...he has said he is not chomping at the bit for a HC job...he is very happy in Auburn...

It's almost like some dark underworld of bloodlust there on the plains. Makes you wonder what type of sick twisted crap is going on there. Like McGregor & Lowder kidnapped his wife and kids and threatened to burn them with boiled peanuts---LOL! Gus is all in.

He's still a young guy with long term ambitions that could be thwarted by the wrong move. I think his biggest risk at this stage is putting together a quality staff. By the time most of these guys get their first gig, they have had 15-20 yrs building a network of coaches that they have worked with. Even a guy in his early 30's has at least a decade. Malzahn has been in the college ranks only a few years. He may be justifiably concerned that he couldn't initially attract a good enough staff with the necessary chemistry to achieve his goals.

He does want to be a head coach, he is just waiting for the right opportunity to come up

sounds like he is thinking straight. without quality assistants that job would be a disaster.
just ask rich rod about the right job. I still think he's a good coach, but MIchigan was just a terrible, terrible match or fit for him. He had it made at West Virginia.
